The NV 5 is one of the new series of cameras in the "NV range" for this year from Samsung. It slots neatly in the middle of the range, and is almost the twin of the NV 7, just lacking the mechanical "Optical Picture Stabilization (OPS)". It still has the Advanced Shake Reduction (ASR) technology that prevents the degradation of image clarity and colour common to flash photography.
Overall this camera looks great in my mind. It is matt black with a large 2.5 inch screen with little or no writing to distract. Its flash is tucked away, and only pops up if needed, adding to the slightly retro look built on by the large lens and chunky mode selection dial. The gently curved body also reminds you of a film camera body from the 80's, just a lot smaller!
Its features are also very respectable. With a 7X Optical zoom, this places it very high in the market, where 3X has been the standard for so long. Although this does mean you have to have a larger lens, the benefits outweigh the costs massively when it comes to taking a great picture. The 7.2 mega pixel capability also means that you can take a great high quality photo, and uses the ubiquitous SD/MMC storage medium. The 2.5 inch TFT LCD screen is clear and sharp, and the speed of taking a photo is excellent, so no more missed shots. I could witter on all day about the technology packed into this very respectably priced offering from Samsung, but specification lists can give you all that you need for a true camera buff.
There are some negatives, the smart button system is intuitive but to a person unused to modern technology it could seem slow, as you need to click at least three times to delete a single shot, on buttons on opposite sides of the screen. Once though you have worked out this system, (not that hard) you are well on your way. A highly recommended purchase, slotting in neatly between your basic point and shoot and the cheaper SLR's available.
