3.0 out of 5 stars NOT THE BEST 9 July 2009
Verified Purchase
I bought the Soundbar because the orignal sound on my Samsung 6 series tv left a lot to be desired. I did want full surround sound but "er, in doors" refused to have cables and speakers scattered around the room, so I thought I'd go for a 2.1 system but "er" would not have a big sub-woofer on show. After some consideration I decided on a soundbar and a wireless sub-woofer that could conveniently be hidden away.
Out of the box the HT-WS1g is a nice looking bar that sits perfectly below my 40inch tv and the sub-woofer nicely behind. Set up was easy and I soon had it up and running even thought it is parsimonious with imputs having only an optical audio and a 3.5 imput jack.
But, then disapointment set in. There are three output modes none of which are adjustable:
The NEWS mode is for mainly speech tv programmes and is acceptable and an improvement on the TV's sound.
The MUSIC mode is basically the speech mode with increased base and "er" liked it when Enrique gave it some wellie.
The big disapointment though is the CINEMA mode which though makes a reasonable effort at surround sound with booming low tones and effects that completely drowns any dialogue. The volumn has to be up loud to hear any speech with the corresponding increase in side effects and as we live in an apartment........plus "er, in doors" has sensitive hearing and I am told to "TURN IT DOWN".
Perhaps the most surprising effect of the "wireless" subwoofer is that I can no longer use my laptop wirelessly on the internet whilst the soundbar is on as it causes interference. I now only use one or the other but not at the same time.
Overall, disapointing. OK base notes but dialogue lacks crispness and clarity particularly in Cinema mode. And, it interferes with my wireless broadband.

3.0 out of 5 stars not true sourround but passable 27 Oct 2009
Bought one 3 weeks ago and set-up in minutes out of the box - no hassle, even for us girlie types. Syncs perfectly with my SAMSUNG 37" and looks good shelf/ wall mounted; but that's where the positive comments end I'm afraid.

Hailed as a viable alternative to drilling holes and running cables the sound bar doesn't cut it in Cinema mode, as previous review. However I have no problems with my wireless laptop tough

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recomended 1 Jun 2009
This is a very good speaker system /soubdbar and woofer/ designed for the people who would like to have better sound than they ussually have on their TV units, and at the same time do not have enough room or money for 5 or 7 speaker system and the AV radio. Soud system uses TV amplifire and is boosted with its own. This Samsung unit should be paired with the TV set through the video cable only. Prehaps the best mode of adjusting it with the TVs speakers is to do with the TV speakers put at the very low level, this should be done using the TV remote unit, and then adjust the bar and woofer unit using the remote unit supplied with the speakers, since this unit seems to influence sound just on the HT-WS1. After this ratio has been set, all the volume should be changed with the TVs remote unit.
Unit has three modes of reproducing the sound: Movies, Music and Speech mode. If coupled correctly /which implies changing the sound mode for the watched channel, and pressing the right buttion on the remote unit, it produce flawless , rich sound worth every penny of the price payed. I am using it with Samsung LE 32A656 TV set and I am complitely satisfied and I would strongly recomend it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Looks good but unfortunately that's it 8 Oct 2009
There is no doubt about it the unit looks very smart and tidy. There are fewer wires than with other similar set-ups and if you have a Samsung TV the number of remote controls that you need to juggle are potentially reduced.

Unfortunately these are the only good things about this item.

The bass speaker is totally uncontrollable, the output is too loud, very 'woolly' and it drowns the speaker bar output. The fan noise from the bass speaker is also very annoying. I very soon swithed the bass unit off at the mains.

The speaker bar generally didnt sound too bad but the pre-set sounds didn't sound natural so it got switched to 'PASS' which presents the sound without any enhancement. All was then well until the volume was lowered for late night viewing and then you hear what can only be described as a pulsing tone from one end of the unit. As you can imagine this was very distracting.

All in all very unsatisfactory and not what you would expect from a company like Samsung.

The only saving grace was the suberb attitude of Amazon and their Marketplace partner, HighesDirect, in sorting out a refund.
