Having had this home theatre system for a month now I am getting fed up of my wife asking, "What did he say?" mind you I know what she means. This system really does make you feel as if you are at the movies, its very powerful. However for such an expensive, top of the range system I think its incredible that you don't get any treble adjustment for speach clarity, to hear the spoken word clearly you have to keep the sound level quite high. The down side is when you doze off and an on screen explosion happens, you really do **** yourself. There is an equaliser but it only gives you silly novelty sound adjustment that once you have heard it you will never want to use it again. Set up of the speakers was a complete waste of time, there is a seperate microphone that you place in your favourite seating position, then you select calibrate and your ear drums explode to the sound of some classical music. Why it has to be so loud I can only guess, maybe its someone at Samsung with a grudge against the company, who knows. The casing of the player is piano black and can attract dust like no ther substance known to man (or woman), it picks up more dust than a Dyson.
The wireless rear speakers are an Irish idea (No offence to the Irish), but you wire the speakers to a substantial independent unit which requires its own 13amp supply. So unless you like having useless lumps of dust collecting plastic at the rear of your living room you are left with the rather obvious option, which is to simply hard wire your speakers in the normal way. Too easy for Samsung, the disgruntled employee is taking the **** again. You have to connect the speaker ires to the wireless unit and then sit the unit next to your home theatre equipment. On powering up the system you are delighted at the lovely light display that illuminates the top front area of the player, my cat especially loves it as the light density changes. She sits in front of the player hitting the illuminated touch sensor control buttons, the disc eject button provides us all with some very spontaneous entertainment as she does a very arctobatic backwards summersault. Cat toy aside, there is no way of turning the light display off when watching a movie which can be a little distracting. I have a series 8 Samsung TV and it has the same problem as the Samsung logo is illuminated at all times and this really is irritaiting when watching a movie.
It might not seem like it but I really am pleased with the system, despite its drawbacks, after all it is a home movie theatre system. Basically if you want to watch an action movie you have to watch it early in the evening, as it can be heard throughout the house. If you live in a flat, please do not buy this system, your neighbours will genuinely hate you. You have the option to miss out the speaker calibration bit, which is what I did after about an hour of sheer frustration and no help from any on screen help menus. To be honest it all works fine without the calibration anyway, its that bloody disgruntled Samsung employee again. The quality of Bluray is excellent as you would expect and the upscaling is pretty almost identical to Bluray. I have not tried out any 3D content yet, from what is available its more geared towards kids or horror fans, but I am sure there will be plenty choice in the not too distant future. Amazon is by far the best option for price and peace of mind, the delivery was efficient (private carrier). The wireless internet feature can be useful, I tend to watch Youtube, you can also get google maps, twitter and facebook, unfortunately the BBC i player is not available yet, but it may be available some time in the New Year.
If you live in a detached house in the countryside, wait for the wife to go out, then put on your favourite action movie and crank up the volume. You will not be disappointed.
