I was very pleased with this product. Delivery was very quick and it is exactly as described on the Amazon website - reasonable price too.

I've fitted it to my old Acer Travelmate 2200 laptop and its as good as new now - probably better (the original drive was only 80 gb). Its set up to dual boot between Windows and Linux and gives me no problems at all. Very easy to install just connect it up and then start installing your operating system. So I would say if your looking to replace your old laptop's hard drive this would be a good one to consider.

By having just one 160GB platter, this hard drive performs very very well, in transfer speeds, power consumption and noise. It has almost twice the transfer speed of the OEM drive I had in my laptop and it is almost silent.
This is the perfect choice if you prefer speed and power economy to space.

EDIT: this review applies to the Samsung SpinPoint M80 HM160HC/HM160GC

I have an IBM thinkpad r40e, which is an excellent rugged laptop. Having extended the memory from the original 256mb to 1gb, I thought I'd try increasing the hard drive size from the original 30GB.

I have been running Ubuntu Linux for ages (the original XP was outdated and Vista to heavy), so I downloaded the latest Ubuntu, backed up my user files and switched the drive. Ubuntu installed with no problems, and the PC is noticeably faster.

Bought this drive to revive an old Tiny laptop with a dead 20gb hard drive.
Install & format was a doddle & has ample space for my needs, as this is a second laptop for the kids.
It has given it a new lease of life, it now runs much faster than it did originally.
I guess ultimately time will tell how reliable it is, not that I'm worried as it's a Samsung product.
Excellent value for money, so far, I can't fault this drive.

excellent fast delivery and then inserted into the laptop there was no problems. Now I can use my laptop as before with loads more space and a great price as well.
I would recommend this drive to anyone looking to upgrade.

This is the second replacement hard disk for my workhorse laptop. It is as described, and complete with basic user installation instructions (but who ever RTM?. There are not many 2.5" IDE hdds available now so this was a good find for me, and affordable, should give another 2+ years use to a computer that would otherwise be recycled.

The Samsung drive was purchased to upgrade the 80Gb one in my wifes Acer Aspire 3003. This drive gets good reviews and I have Samsung Spinpoint Drives in my own PC that have outlasted other brands. Fitting the drive was simply a matter of unplugging the old one and plugging this in its place. Amazon was the lowest priced supplier of this 160Gb drive that I found.

This has been fitted into an old Dell Latitude C840 laptop with the additional benefit of Windows 7. The new drive and W7 together were a lot cheaper than a new laptop with as good a screen, and replace the original 30GB drive and its XP.

The drive is almost silent in operation, and was very easy to fit. The Dell has a drive caddy with an adaptor header. Swapping the header across between the old drive and new needs to be done with great care while taking suitable precautions against damaging the pins (all too easy to bend them) and against Electrostatic Discharge damage (ESD).

ESD is the quickest way to damage semiconductors, and the hard drive is no exception to this weakness - I repeat, be careful.

Formatting the new drive with the XP SP2 re-install disc was simple, ending up with about 149GB of actual capacity as expected, but it took a while, as did re-installing XP2. Once XP was there again and fully upgraded to latest then W7 was applied as an upgrade to replace it all. All the Dell device drivers needed to be re-installed each time.

All through this palaver, lasting the best part of two days, the Samsung drive just got on with the job, never caused any problems, just did exactly what was required of it, and was recognised correctly by the Dell and two different lots of Windows.

My only regret is not being able to obtain one of the larger capacity 7200rpm Samsung drives in PATA/IDE configuration. At least the laptop should have another few years of useful life thanks to this new drive and a clean install.
