Ok,
I got my galaxy S Wifi 5.0 5 inch tablet/media player 8GB for £135.

I got it to replace my sony 7inch portable DVD player that has a 6 hour battery using a USB key, but it weighed over a kilo. I diddn't want a phone, as too expensive (for the screen size, galaxy note is a similar size and £600, and does not play AVI files) and it would not have good battery life.

My criteria was very specific:
5 inch screen, no smaller
avi playback - as all my videos are avi format
plug in memory
click and drag operation. no software, or conversion software needed
fit in a shirt pocket

Initial impressions
build quality is very good, it's solid and weighty, but a bit slippery in the hand. it looks like a galaxy note. I've got a galaxy apollo gti5800 phone, and it's screen is 3.2 inches, that is just over the WIDTH of the galaxy players! The screen is huge, but it fits into a shirt pocket with no trouble at all (I got a gel case for it, and it still fits). I've also made a stand using a compact flash card case and some velcro, so I don't have to hold it.

The screen is great, resolution is 800x480. It's bright and clear from any angle, plus you can brighten the screen on video playback (something my phone couldn't do, well it was only £65), and is clear in bright sunlight (but highly reflective). The capacitive screen is very responsive to use, and feels sturdy. Typing on it is so easy to do in landscape format as it is a good size.

As a photo player the screen is really good. I got rid of my digital photo frame as a result. I have about 1Gb of photos on it, and and I have my own folders set up on the memory card for easy filing.

The battery is 2500mah, which is impressive. However, it's non removeable. And my first test results are:

It's lasted 9 1/2 hours of standard def video before the battery warning came on! (showed 15%) with the screen set to 50% brightness and volume to 50% as well.

It lasted 7 hours of 720p HD mp4 video before the battery warning came on. Strangely it played the file with no problem, but my friends gen 8 Archos 101 needed the cinema pluggin to play it. considering the website quotes only 5 hours for video playback, I'm stunned.

The best thing is, it plays all my avi files without problems, my Archos 5it needed the £15 cinema pluggin to watch the same files. Downloads and DVD rips, that was my biggest concern. MP4's don't work in my DVD players, so I don't use that format.

Charging time with the mains adapter is only 3 1/4 hours from 15% capacity, I had an Archos 5IT, and it took 6 hours to charge via USB.

The stereo speakers are loud and pretty clear, but quiet recordings could be a problem due to the EU volume limiter. The headphones have good sound quality, but the jack is in the bottom of the device, so would need to go in a pocket upside down. It does have a mute/pause button on the chord, which is handy. The power button on the unit also acts as a device lock on video playback, that stops all controls working, except volume, which I love.

wifi signal is strong, much better than my phones when upstairs, away from my router. I've had no problems linking it to a wifi hotspot or to another router.

It uses micro Sd cards up to 32GB, and goes in the top of the device under a flap, with easy access.

Skype works really well with great sound, much better than on my phone. It has a built in mic on the bottom, next to the headphone socket. However, the people I talk to report echoing, as the speaker is so close to the mic. Using headphones fixes it though.

BBC i player, itv player and ch5 player all work, as does Netflix (with great volume control). No issues with buffering on these services.

It has the full google marketplace (play) as standard, plus it plays flash video with flashplayer 11. It plays flawlesly using youtube or the web. I've just used the google navigation software, and it was flawless in getting me to my destination. As the screen is so big, you can see all the info on the screen.

downloaded a few games and the graphics are really smooth, the touch screen is responsive as is rotating the player.

One thing I have noticed is when viewing text on web pages, holding it very close; the text can look a little pixelated. Only a little, but you can see it. Not a big problem, but it could annoy some people.

Overall, I'm very glad I took the plunge, and I don't regret it one bit (especially at the price I got it for). This is a very underrated device, and samsung should try promoting it properly. It just got a best buy in which magazine for mp3 players, but this device is SO much more than that!

Give it:
Android 2.3 to allow tethering to a phone, louder volume for speakers, HDMI output, and a replaceable battey. That would make this device perfect.

Lastly, and perfect for carying the device, it has a loop for a strap, so you can't drop it.

however, the playing continues!

This item is brilliant, the codecs and video quality is excellent. being able to play downloaded flv files is a great bonus. Speed and connection is great. Settings are straight forward and makes life easy to set your Samsung how you like it.
The headphones provided are great quality, i was a bit surprised as i thought they would be bog standard but they are in truth good quality.
I have thrown a 16 gig class 6 sd micro card in my device, i use it so much for video and documentary watching i needed a lot of space to hold the files.

Music sounds brilliant on the this Samsung. I have a folder for music videos and one for albums. End result is that i am more than happy with my Samsung Galaxy and for the price it could not be better. One warning though the battery life is not great. I go into settings and set brightness to it's lowest and have bluetooth turned off, makes a big difference, also having brightness turned down changes only the devices home screen, when you are using it the brightness is great.

I charge nightly but use it while charging so i never notice the problem as i am using while charging anyway.

When this was announced at the start of the year, I waited for what seemed like an eternity for it to become available to buy, and I must say it was well worth the wait.

Prior to buying this, I had an iRiver Multi-Codec Jukebox mp3 player, which after probably about 8 years was still working beautifully, but I fancied a change. The Galaxy S Wifi is Samsung's answer to the iPod Touch, so much more than just an mp3 player. I must admit, I don't have a smartphone, so the whole experience has been a revelation. I didn't want to get an iPod Touch, as I don't like some of the limitations of Apple such as iTunes. I've been used to `drag-and-drop' and with my Samsung Galaxy S Wifi, that's exactly what I've been able to do. It was so easy to copy my existing music collection, by simply copy & pasting from my PC to the player. Unlike the iPod, the Galaxy S Wifi can play a whole variety of file types, and it had absolutely no problems with my OGG files.

The Wifi model has essentially the same functionality as the popular Samsung Galaxy S phone, just without being able to make calls (although you can make internet calls using Skype). So, no monthly fees to pay.

The device is an absolute pleasure to use. I particularly like the 5.0 size (rather than 4.0) as the larger screen size makes for a much better viewing experience, while still being pocket-sized and easily portable. The screen colours are vivid and pictures are really sharp. The touch screen is beautifully responsive. The wifi connection works a treat and downloading apps is simple.

The sound quality of the mp3 player is excellent. I must admit though, I downloaded the PowerAmp music player app which I use rather than the music player supplied by Samsung. I hadn't saved any album art with my music files (to save on space), but the PowerAmp app was able to find and display the art for 99% of my files.

Because this is new to the market and is a larger size than a standard `phone', buying accessories may be a little problematic. I bought a pack of screen protectors and a protective skin case on e-Bay from a supplier based in Hong Kong, which fitted perfectly. I'm not a fan of the white back, so getting a black skin was essential (I would also have preferred black rather than white headphones).

It is a bit of a shame that it doesn't come with more memory. I was used to 40 GB on my iRiver mp3 player, so I bought a 32 GB micro-SD card which has worked seamlessly.

So, I would highly recommend the Galaxy S Wifi 5.0 if you're looking for a great entertainment experience.
