I bought it in early February and got it shipped to the UK as it was cheaper buying here in Euros than getting it on Amazon.co.uk. I've been using it extensively for the last 2 months. Other reviewers have made plenty of comments on the various features so i will try and keep that in summary form. I always want to know what's bad about a product when I buy it so I've focused more on mentioning the bad. However despite some of its shortcomings it is still the best phone I've ever used - the good outweighs the bad by miles.
I must say that I travel between two coutries a lot and in my home country (Sri Lanka) I use this purely as a tablet with a sim that is only active for data. The other half of my time (I spend around 10 days every month in Bangladesh) I use this as my local mobile phone for calls and internet/email. However I donlt get that many calls on this when in Bangladesh compared to my regular phone.
Please note that unless specified otherwise I am using all the `stock' programs for things like email that came with the Note.
Firstly, what's great about it:
1. Screen - excellent - the perfect size for reading emails, web browsing and especially great if you use it to read work related attachments such as spreadsheets because the screen size menas you have less scrolling around to do and the text is crisp and clear. I honestly cannot see and difference in resolution on this compared to the iphone's retina display although 'technically' the retina display has a higher resolution. If anyone can actually tell the difference i@d probably be willing to bet a lot of money that to the naked eye the difference is inconceivable.... Read more ›
But that's just the environment. What you don't appreciate from the photos is the screen - amazing! Enormous, clear, and really rather beautiful. And the camera! All the settings you'd expect on a compact, plus Full HD video recording. And whatever people may say, the phone itself isn't ridiculously big: it's actually rather smaller than I thought it would be. Feels big in the hand, yes, especially after an iPhone. But looks great, and is really easy to use.
Ease of use: okay, not quite up to the standard of iOS. But the greater flexibility makes up for that, and it's not exactly difficult to use. Samsung provide some helpful user guides, and there's plenty more out there on the web. The fact that you're not limited to Apple's walled garden makes a huge difference. I thought I'd be moving gradually over to an all-Apple environment - but in fact I'm still happily running Windows, Android and (because it is lovely) an iPad 2. And enjoying all of it!... If you do go for this phone be prepared as I was for comments such as "What is that", "that is a brick","Have you got a briefcase for that phone". I think we have been conditioned to believe that a phone should be a certain size, however having owned the phone for a few weeks now I can honestly say I could never go back to a small screen phone and think Samsung have got it right for the Note.
First impressions: Android has really developed into a much slicker os. The google play app store matches Apple's though the adverts are annoying on free downloads. The ability to buy and download music from the Amazon MP3 store came as a pleasant surprise.
Now the device. The screen: wow. Its super amoled offering surpasses Apple's much vaunted retina display and its size is a joy. Colours are deep and rich; web browsing and YouTube playing are outstanding; the camera is brilliant and I love the fact that you can share straight to Facebook.
Battery life is better than the iPhone's - I'm getting a full day out of it with heavy use; the iPhone was charged at 3 pm every day from being fully charged in the morning (without wifi on etc). As a calling device, it beats an iPhone. Emails are so easy to read. Set up is a cinch too.
The phone stylus is useful. Definitely recommend.
And as for the pocket test, it is so thin and light that it feels unobtrusive at all times. I love it.
