Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Full-HD video recording: The U10 is the ideal solution if you're looking for ultimate portability and ease of use in a full HD camcorder. The U10 offers full-HD video recording with 1920x1080 resolution. The U10's 1/2.3 inch CMOS sensor gives the ability to capture impressive 10 mega-pixel digital still images, all of which can be reviewed on the camcorder's clear, two-inch LCD screen.

Ultra-compact design: At 56mm x 103mm x 15.5mm, and weighing just 95g including the battery, the U10 is ultra-compact with an ergonomic design that breaks free of the traditional look and feel of pocket-sized camcorders. Its sleek frame is accentuated by a wave-design that angles the body of the camcorder at seven degrees, allowing users to grip the camcorder more comfortably, reducing stress on the wrist or arm. This same ergonomic design philosophy is also found in the R10 and C10 camcorders, which both feature Samsung's unique Active Angle Lens.

Intelli-studio: The U10 features Samsung's play-edit-sharing program called intelli-studio so you can edit or share your video without access to a PC. When you do connect, the camcorder's built-in intelli-studio program allows you to turn any computer into a mobile studio, giving you the ability to edit and play your video without having to install supporting software.

One-touch "upload" button: Sharing is also simplified as the intelli-studio program takes the hassle out of uploading content to popular video sharing websites. A one-touch "upload" button provides a direct connection to YouTube, so footage can be online within seconds of shooting.

On-camera editing: In addition, the camcorders also allow basic on-camera editing, including the ability to split video files. The animated thumbnail feature simplifies searching for video clips. Every video clip is represented by a small thumbnail on the LCD screen which provides a short playback when highlighted by the user.

Having used this product for a couple of days now in different testing conditions I can state that this extremely compact handheld unit certainly records and delivers an excellent picture on both internal screen, PC screens and directly on a Panasonic 42 HD TV via the supplied cable. I have recorded under strip lights, night time, bright sunshine, indoors etc - results are all consistently good and the auto exposure adjusts quickly. (I have not tried sports nor snow/ beach settings however.) Audio is not bad either but clearly not up to units costs 5 X the price. A number of reviewers have complained elsewhere about the touch sensitive buttons on the rear used to navigate across menus. The buttons and menus are however easy to understand and use, particularly, if you are used to using something like an I Touch. (I recommend using your thumb rather than other finger tips.) The build in software loads automatically and allows for good basic movie editing providing your PC is up to it. You'll not need anything else unless you aspire to greatness. You can split files on the unit itself but this is the extent of the editing features available on board.

In summary - a great handheld for the price with a stunning HD pictures on HD TV possible direct from the unit! A great holiday or party tool! People looking for a replacement for a full sized camera will however want to try it our for themselves before buying. Delivers what it says on the box

It might not be an issue for most people. But editing the files produced by this camcorder in an NLE application might prove difficult. The most successful NLE I have used so far is Serif's MoviePlus X3. But it won't render the U10's highest res files out to 1920x1080 MP4s or even 1440x1080 MP4s. Sony's Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9.0b does this okay. But if the files are longer than about five minutes the program crashes for no apparent reason. I believe others have experienced the same problem with MP4/AVCHD files in VMSP 9.0b. So it's probably nothing to do with the Sammy U10. However, since this camcorder is an NTSC video device, if you have installed Corel Video Studio Pro X2 on your PC as a PAL application then it will not import the U10 files AT ALL. It will only do so if you have installed CVSPX2 as an NTSC application. The other thing I've noticed is that the U10 adds an extra frame or two of audio at the end of each clip. These must be trimmed back in your editing software to avoid audio glitches at the edit points. Not a massive deal. But worth mentioning because it's an odd feature of the camcorder.

Yet, to be fair, the Sammy U10 is not aimed at video editing buffs. As a simple HD point-and-shoot device it is excellent value and produces brilliant 10MP stills. Just so long as you realise that if your video clips need any post-production before uploading to an online sharing service, there could be major hassle in store. I would have given the U10 five stars if it had been better at coping with low-light situations. Sadly it does not. The images are a tad too dark and grainy for my taste compared to those produced under the same sorts of lighting conditions by a similar product currently on the market.

Mind you, that costs about forty quid more. So the Samsung HMX-U10 is the best overall choice for those on a tight budget.

Incidentally - you'll need a class 6 (or above) SD card for this unit. Due to the high data rates, slower cards will produce jerky video. Amazon sells an inexpensive 16GB ByteStor card that is perfect for the U10.

Since the Flip arrived there's been a bit of a glut of compact hi-def video cameras hitting the market. I've been lucky enough to sample a couple of these cameras (by Sony and Kodak) and having tried this Samsung I'd have to say they're all pretty close in ability with only the gimmicks (the Sony's rotating lens and Kodak with it's weather proofing) separating them.

Samsung throws slow motion video into the mix, but the fact that it's low-def limits it's appeal. It is however very light and compact. Video quality is ok and comparable to the others (and again low light video quality is pretty ho-hum). The still camera boasts 10 megapixels but is no match for a decent quality dedicated still digital camera. Other limitations are digital zoom (which is also a handicap with all it's direct rivals) and does not work when set to 1080p. Setting it to 720p allows the zoom to activate and doesn't seem to affect video quality too much.

One last thing worth noting is the touch sensitive buttons, which are a bit to easy to press by accident as they to lack any tactile feedback. Aside from that the Samsung U10 is a decent addition to the ultra-compact video camera market.

NB. This camera comes with no memory card or internal memory - so you'll need to buy an SD card to use it.
