Despite reading about the problems experienced by those who had bought this unit, I went ahead a ordered one. What a mistake! I had all of the same problems. A firmware download changed nothing so I asked for the software update which the machine promptly rejected. Must have spent a fortune on 'phone calls to Samsung. I contacted Amazon who agreed to take the machine back and refund my money. This machine does NOT work and Samsung should not be offering it for sale. You have been warned!

I too had the same problem with this item that several people did in regard to delayed stuttery play back and also slow responses when using the built in TV guide/Freeview. I phoned Samsung and they posted me a DVD which updates the software in the unit and bingo now works fine. Phone number for Samsung is 0845 7267864

If you want to get a unit that you'll have been pleased to spend your money on then stear clear of this one. It records ok but the tv guide is usually out of sync, so for example it'll say eastenders is on at 6.30 instead of 7.30 (when it actually is on) but it's major problem is that it is extremely slow to register input from the remote. This makes it thoroughly annoying whilst changing channels and editing your library. Not something you'd expect a unit to have if you've paid a lot for it. I would advise you to follow the reviews and go for either the sony, philips or another that has a good write up.

Do not buy this. I concur with all the poor reviews. The software for the machine is hopeless. Video plus recording is very unreliable. Switching between HD and DVD is poor. I wish I had never purchased this. My previous Sony had excellent software but I replaced it with a Samsung because that one died after only 2 and half years of not especially heavy use.

Having bought this to replace a 3 1/2 year old Panasonic HDD recorder and to work with a Samsung TV, we've been disappointed that the recording capabilities are less/worse than from the older technology.
We've programmed it to automatically record from the TV, but with no success, so have stopped relying on the timer & do it manually. Having transferred films, with the intention of copying them to disc, the cumbersome editing facilities make this a chore. Perhaps we were spoilt by the precision of Panasonic, but had not expected things to have gone backwards since getting that
If you stop a recorded programme (or pause it for longer than about 10 minutes), it goes back to the beginning. Who remembers to place a "marker" when the phone rings?
It buzzes/whines when certain DVDs are played. We returned the first machine as the level was unacceptable, but as it still occurs on the replacement machine with some DVDs, this seems to be a design fault.
Overall, this doesn't live up to the high standard we expect of Samsung products.

i orderd 1 of the samsung hdd dvd recorders from a seller on amazon,it came from germany, and i have never looked back, it works great,i had a vcr-dvd combo before, and this samsung blows it right out of the water, the ease of use is fantastic, and when veiwing the free view and a dvd through a hdmi conection well its just fantastic,i would highly recamend this item to anyone, and it is really easy to use, only sad thing is that i only orderd the 160gb moddle and not the 250gb one, great peace of kit a+

This is a perfecty adequate machine - with a good sized hard drive. It is simple and fairly straight forward to use and the combination of HDMI, DIVX and legacy SCART connectioons make this very inexpensive recorder a useful addition to the clutter I keep under my TV. One button recording, easy to set up - you are all wondering where the buts are going to come in...? Well, here they are:-

There is no clear indicater of the space used on the HDD - and nothing I can see anywhere that tells me how much time/space I have left... We have twice missed the end of a film, because it ran out... which it does because unlike more expensive HDD recorders, when its initial 8 hours of "oh just leave it overnight dear, there is bound to be something to watch on it" is over - it carries on by continuing on a new recording... which uses up considerable space...

Now it does have the ability to split a recording... and the review speed is reasonable - but when you are watching a short programme in the middle of 8 hours of recording and the telephone rings, so you stop it, or put it on hold... after only a few minutes it switches the playback off - once stopeed it cannot remember where it was... so you then have to plough back through the full 8 hour recording to find it again...

It doesn't like reading vdeos made on the pc - but it is comfortable with pc generated DivX films... so the whole thing is a mixed bag... If you have oodles of money to burn, get a more expensive recorder with more features... If you want a perfectly good, straight forward and basic HDD and DVD recorder to go with your HDMI TV... then it is a bargain...

I had no intention of buying an HDD recorder when I started looking round but circumstances dictated I bought this one, having read the reviews (after) i wondered if it would even work....., however set up was easy, instructions a bit complicated but no worse than many others, seems to do what its says on the box and is quiet in operation. It works well with my Samsumg telly which is pleasing, BUT, and here's the big "but" the quality of recording and playback is no where near as good as my old panasonic recorder, i used all the same leads HDMI and scart as I did with the panasonic but it doesn't make any difference. There must be some fundamental problem with the unit as even watching tv with the recorder selected as input from my HD freesat receiver the picture quality has deteriorated. Shame really as i love the flexibility of the HDD, its on trial thankfully so it'll go back and get replaced with a Sony or pansonic
