2.0 out of 5 stars Good apart from hdmi 31 Aug 2007
This recorder was fine until I decided to use hdmi. Once I had bought the hdmi cale (not supplied) a few days after using/buying this product I noticed a huge problem. Syncing was well out between lips and sound. This only occurs when using the hdmi cable, which kind of defeats the purpose of paying the premium for having an hdmi connection. It was so bad it's like watching a badly dubbed Chinese Karate film from the 80's. Using the composite was fine, no sync problems whatsoever.

In general it was a decent recorder (I returned mine and bought a different brand) let down badly by the hdmi problem. Like I say it's fine if you dont use this, but you are paying a premium for the advertised hdmi socket, and why bother paying this if you dont intend to use it?

My advice is to buy a different product. A firmware update id not fix the issue.

4.0 out of 5 stars good at a good price 17 Jun 2009
easy to use, large hard drive, much, much better than my previous JCV but not just as good as my new Sony, but then the Sony cost twice as much.
For easy recording of programs you want to keep and or save on DVD disk, this is well worth the money.

2.0 out of 5 stars I thought it was good until I tried a Sony 26 Nov 2008

Bought this as my first HDD recorded. At first I thought it was great as it is a world apart from VHS. Unfortunately I then went and got a Sony 870 HDD recorder and it was a big a step up from this as this was from VHF. For a full breakdown of why I think that go and find the Sony and have a look at my review over there.

As a basic appraisal of this unit I would say it is good quality (in terms of playback) and relatively easy to set up recording. The naming screen where you set the name for programs you are recording or have recorded is clumsy as are many other aspects of its interface. The editing facilities are fairly good in terms of what you can do but again slow and cumbersome to use. A distinct lack of common sense has gone into the firmware - for example, if you stop something you are watching it doesn't remember where you were so you have to start again from the beginning and visual search through the whole program - highly tedious. You can manually set a memory marker and then use the skip function to skip to it but at least half the time we forget and end up cursing.

Chapter markers are supposed to be created automatically but they aren't. You can create them using memory markers by adding them manually - a maximum of eight in one title. Also, you cannot add new markers before later ones - you first have to delete all the later ones, set the one you want so it is next chronologically and then go back and re-create all the others again. Very annoying - the instructions say you can create them anywhere and the others will be renumbered but it simply won't, you just get a little "X" saying not possible if you try this. The Sony by comparison does set them automatically, doesn't limit you to 8 and allows you create new ones wherever you want.
