I must say that I was very impressed with this camera overall, given its low price tag - it has a wealth of useful features, performs very well under most conditions and takes bright well saturated 16MP pictures.
Straight out of the box the camera comes with a Quick start guide and a CD-Rom containing software for Intelli-Studio, remote back up of photos to PC and a full user manual.

The initial set up requires the battery and a micro-SD card to be fitted and the camera charged up. Make sure you have a Micro-SD card at hand to fit, or purchase an adequate one with the camera- it does not take standard SD cards.

First impressions of the camera were good - it is very compact, easy to use - even with my big fingers - and it has a vivid 3" LCD viewfinder on the rear. Samsung have also added a concealed front viewfinder display for taking self portraits. When it is not in use, you have to look very hard to see that it's there, it's so well blended into the camera bodywork.

Setting up the social applications was relatively easy - from the full manual it was easy to follow the instructions to set up the wi-fi key in the camera and then enter user data for Facebook and Picasa (it can also connect to others such as photobucket but these were the two I tested). Transferring photos was then almost effortless - it seemed to work pretty well.

Setting up the auto back up was also straightforward - this requires installing auto back-up from the CD-ROM then plugging the camera into the PC so that it can store details of the PC being used. Following set-up of this function, clicking on the auto-back up icon results in photos from the camera being transferred to a folder on the PC. No need to connect using a cable each time, a really useful feature.

Have you ever used a piece of technology (for example) and thought: why doesn't it do THIS? Or why doesn't it do it THAT way?...The people at Samsung seem to have put themselves into the consumers' shoes and thought about everything that Joe Public would want from a compact digital camera. The Samsung DV300F SMART is very aptly named - it's a clever little thing that does everything you need and more.

The camera is of average size, and is half gloss and half matt finish. The aesthetics of it are pleasing - it looks good, it feels good in the hand and it has a high-quality overall appearance. It comes with a charger, and the cable doubles as the USB cable to plug the camera into your computer. The cable is quite short, and the plug feels very light and plasticky, but if that's the only criticism them Samsung can be proud of themselves.

There are several innovative features on this camera:

* It has an LCD screen on the front as well as a whopping 3.0inch LCD screen on the back as would be expected. The front screen is brilliant for taking a picture of yourself (as is often the case with me and my husband if we holiday together and cannot find anybody to take our photograph!) - press the clearly labelled button on the top of the camera 'Front LCD' et voila - both front and rear screens are activated. This front screen also doubles as an animation to grab the attention of babies and toddlers when they're having their picture taken. It ALSO comes into force when using the timer function; instead of the usual few flashes that indicate when your the camera will activate, the front screen displays large numbers counting down from 10, so it couldn't be more obvious when to say 'cheese'.

* The SMART function of the camera is evident when taking photographs.

This camera is an attractive little piece of equipment. I have always been a fan of Samsung's aesthetics and they didn't disappoint here.

The DV300F is matt and gloss finish, is lightweight and fits easily in to the pocket. It has a generously sized LCD screen, making for easily taken pictures. In the age of social networking, it also has a front screen (as does the brand's leading phones) to enable you to easily take self portraits (if my friends are anything to go by, possibly looking like a duck).

Set up was easy, and you can hook up the camera via wifi so there's no need to faff around with cables. When it comes to charging, the phone will also charge using the industry standard micro USB, so there aren't any propietary charging / battery / cabling issues.

My main issue with the camera is the ease of use. The camera is tough to use; I can't easily switch between macro and video modes, instead of being able to do this from the main buttons on the camera itself, I have to go through menus. The quality is also lacking for what is meant to be a high quality high MP camera (though the eye can only render so much in colour, the depth and clarity is lacking).

It's a decent enough holiday camera and is good looking, but if you're looking for high-end stills and ease of use, you may want to move on and take a look at a different model.

This Samsung DV300F may not be the choice of serious amateur photographers, but it's brilliant for the casual user looking for a Wi-Fi enabled, compact, simple, fun and social camera, that takes good pictures with minimal user input. It's great for those who want to instantly share photo's and video's with family and friends via Facebook or Picasa amongst a few other online services.

I actually had quite a bit of fun using this camera. There's a variety of scene modes along with various photo and video effects/filters that work surprisingly well, some of the face warping effects are hilarious and actually made me laugh on a few occasions. The kids mode is also clever, where an animation plays on the front mounted LCD. My nephews loved this feature, although they watched the animation with curious faces, rather than a smile. The camera offers manual controls of ISO, aperture and shutter speeds, but casual users probably won't have any need for this.

Picture quality is pretty good, producing fairly sharp, bright and vibrant photo's under most conditions; however, it's not great in low light which is to be expected considering the small sensor and high number of megapixels crammed in. Flash is adequate, but isn't great and has a tendency to wash out the main subject. The 5x optical zoom is a welcome addition.

The 720p video quality is fairly good and again some of the effects are quite cool. It's comparable to my old Panasonic Lumix TZ7 video quality, but both are outshone by my Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphone, which shoots video at 1080p. It would have been much better if this camera could have shot in 1080p, as I love taking video's as much as photo's.

Build quality of this camera is good.
