The printer doesn't do duplex printing, and its colour quality, while good, can't quite match that of a high quality inkjet when producing glossy photos. But print quality is certainly competitive with vastly more expensive colour laser printers.
The printer integrates well with Linux and CUPS. Debian users should note that the driver installer places files named smfpd* in the /etc/rc*.d/ directories on your system, which interfere with the Debian update procedure. The files also launch a printer daemon that consumes vast amounts of CPU time. I fixed this by removing these files and rebooting, as the daemon only serves Samsung parallel port printers, and this is a USB printer.
So, in summary, not perfection incarnate, but excellent for the price.
If I had to gripe (and it's hard to at these prices), it would be:
small paper-feed capacity (130 sheets)
does not work with any of the wireless print servers I tried.
A big warning:
Description says it has Base-100 ethernet but it does not (you need the much more expensive CLP-320N for that, not the CLP-320 and memory is "only" 32MB not 256MB. )
Like many other reviewers, I changed to a laser printer out of frustration with inkjets, having become thoroughly irrirtated by the head-cleaning cycles and 'banding' associated with inkjets.
I don't find the running costs particularly high, but, being a domestic user, I don't use it every day. My 315 never achieved the number of pages/cartridge that Samsung claim (I know because I keep a count) and I expect the 320 to be the same. The 315 was sold as a low-noise printer and it generally was, but this successor is very noisy, making rhythmic wheezing and groaning sounds that make me wonder if it has a bearing wearing out already (I have had it only a month).
I rarely print any pictures on it, so I can't express an opinion on its colour handling.
To sum up: It was very cheap. It does what it's supposed to do, but makes a lot of noise doing it and take the manufacturers pages/cartridge and speed claims with a pinch of salt.
Would I buy another one? Probably.
Would I recommend it to a friend? Probably.
UPDATE: 14 March 2012
I have just changed the black toner. The original that came with the printer produced 490 pages, though I had to remove the cartridge and give a shake to redistribute the toner a few times to achieve that. The colours are still going strong after 200 prints of web-site pages.
It is still wheezing and groaning, but shows no sign of dying.
It produces first class printing, which if then copied through an inkjet still gives good copy. Read more
