Quality piece of kit. 17 April 2007
I'm not usually an early adopter of new technology, but I've just bought a 46 inch Sony LCD,so to get the best out of it I bought this blu ray player.Build quality is outstanding, packaging and accesories are also of the highest order.HDMI cable included as well as component cable. Also the machine plays my dvd+r and +rw discs recorded on my Philips dvd recorder.Upscaling of my existing dvds is very good, picture quality is great.Much better than freeview picture from the tv.Two free blu ray discs are included;a jazz disc and the film S.W.A.T.My other tv is a 36 inch Toshiba CRT so I was used to stunning pictures. The only picture that beats the Toshiba is the High Definition of S.W.A.T.Outside shots in the training ground are breathtaking with bright blue sky, rich green grass and crisp detailed skin tones.Absolutely out of this world.Memory card slots are also a useful feature for viewing images from a digital camera. If you can pick this machine up for a good price go for it, as build quality usually deteriorates as new technology becomes mainstream.

Good value machine 18 Sep 2007
    Amazon Verified Purchase
Reading some reviews of this machine on Amazon and elsewhere I was initially a little hesitant to buy but I picked one up for £270 and it's proved great value for money.
The UK firmware upgrade and mutli-region hack worked fine and haven't caused any problems.
I would point out the region 2/multi-region hack suggested on the link on this page is wrong - the correct code is 57538 which I obtained via the AV Forums site.
All the US Blu-Ray discs I have play perfectly well and the disc loading times are certainly no longer than my HD-DVD player.

I had no problems with this player, it's a little slow to start up and read the disc but I've read that that's common to the hd technology. I've watched over 15 blu-ray movies on this and had no problems. Also plays my (region 2) dvd's without problems and upconverts to 1080p (full hd). I'm not sure the card reader will get much use - I tried it once to make sure it worked, it was slightly slower than I expected but the picture quality was very good.

Watching movies like swordfish and the free Jazz disc that came with the player was amazing - In swordfish you can see dust floating around the interview room in the airport - not visible on the dvd version.

There's a lot of talk about blu-ray vs hd-dvd and comparisons with the vhs and betamax saga and I guess there's a few that worry about which way to go in case they are caught in the "defeated" camp. Me, I'm not taking sides and I'm certainly not going to worry about one format becoming obsolete or not, *if* that time comes I'll probably be able to transfer the data from the discs (hd-dvd or blu-ray) to the "winning" format. But I don't think that will be decided for a few years yet.

As soon as the studios release a few more hd-dvd's I'll buy a hd-dvd player too. One things for certain is that I'm not going to buy any more dvd's - it'll be hd-dvd or blu-ray for me from now on.

I bought this player for three reasons:

    1) It's ability to output and upscale to 1080 progressive - looks nice on my 1080p 52" lcd and important to be able to upconvert my existing dvd's to the 1080p the tv supported.

    2) Higher capacity discs - before the I've got more layers than you war started.

    3) It was released a few weeks before the hd-dvd player

    4) There are more blu-ray discs available.

    Against:

    1) Blu-Ray is easy to pronounce blury - catchy but not a good testament to HD.

    2) HD-DVD has some good movies not available on blu-ray.

    3) Price - a little more expensive than the toshiba player.

I did consider marking this as 4 stars because of the price, but I thought the 1080p upconverting of my existing dvd's makes it worthwhile - the toshiba upconverts to 1080i/720p - which just didn't seem as good.
