Having had a PS3 for over three years I have not needed a bluray player before, and to be honest, still don't. But as I upgraded to a Samsung 3D plasma earlier this month I got this bundled with it. I am surprised at how slow it takes to load up a disc - it seems much slower than my noisy, tired old PS3 (and this is why I am only awarding it 4 stars) - but the results are worth the wait. I was more interested in the Smart Hub feature, though, as I want to be able to stream my video content from my Mac Mini, and it works effortlessly (I have set up TVMOBiLi on the Mac to enable the bluray player to locate the files).
I found the set up a little fiddly to start off with, but now it is, it's easy to use. The only downside is the lack of Apps, but as it's only just out I guess I shouldn't complain too much - as long as we get some more soon! the BBC iPlayer arrived this morning, and is a great feature, especially the HD content. But there is currently no LoveFilm, or any other worthy film/tv apps at the moment. Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are there, but to be honest, I have them on the pc, ipad, iphone and every other device in the house.
I haven't hooked up an external hard drive via the USB port yet (which is annoyingly on the front of the machine - WHY DO THEY DO THAT!) but after streaming HD content already from the Mac I don't envisage any issues there either.
On the whole, I would definitely recommend it - you can pick up a dongle online for about £45, if you really want one, but for me it sits comfortably in the corner of the room next to the router anyway. A great budget 3D player, with some cool features, can't wait to see what other apps come out for it !!
