    4.0 out of 5 stars Great BD/DVD player! 12 July 2011
    Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this as a replacement to the rather lacklustre Bluray playback provided by my home theatre PC (the available playback software is just rubbish to put it mildly). And boy, did it deliver! Extremely fast loading times, stunningly detailed images with deep colours and black levels, silky-smooth 24p playback, hassle-free 3D, responsive interface, good upscaling of DVDs. And as a bonus, this player can easily be made region-free for DVDs - very handy for those of us with a large multi-region DVD collection

[UPDATE: Later firmware revisions have disabled the remote hack, but players that have already been made region-free will remain region-free. Just a warning for anyone planning on buying this player now...]

Negatives? It doesn't have any wifi capability built-in (you need to purchase a dongle). The remote is a little cumbersome and more annoyingly, it looks far too similar to my Samsung TV remote which is very confusing. The main menu screen looks a little cheesy and unprofessional. The drive mechanism is very noisy when loading menus (but fine when playing). Drive door and tray loading mechanism looks a tad cheap (but hardly surprising at this price point).

I didn't test the "apps" on the player - my Samsung TV already comes with these apps (and more) and has full wifi connectivity whereas this player does not. Quite frankly I bought the player purely to play discs, nothing more. And that it does extremely well...

    4.0 out of 5 stars Promising 22 April 2011
Having had a PS3 for over three years I have not needed a bluray player before, and to be honest, still don't. But as I upgraded to a Samsung 3D plasma earlier this month I got this bundled with it. I am surprised at how slow it takes to load up a disc - it seems much slower than my noisy, tired old PS3 (and this is why I am only awarding it 4 stars) - but the results are worth the wait. I was more interested in the Smart Hub feature, though, as I want to be able to stream my video content from my Mac Mini, and it works effortlessly (I have set up TVMOBiLi on the Mac to enable the bluray player to locate the files).

I found the set up a little fiddly to start off with, but now it is, it's easy to use. The only downside is the lack of Apps, but as it's only just out I guess I shouldn't complain too much - as long as we get some more soon! the BBC iPlayer arrived this morning, and is a great feature, especially the HD content. But there is currently no LoveFilm, or any other worthy film/tv apps at the moment. Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are there, but to be honest, I have them on the pc, ipad, iphone and every other device in the house.

I haven't hooked up an external hard drive via the USB port yet (which is annoyingly on the front of the machine - WHY DO THEY DO THAT!) but after streaming HD content already from the Mac I don't envisage any issues there either.

On the whole, I would definitely recommend it - you can pick up a dongle online for about £45, if you really want one, but for me it sits comfortably in the corner of the room next to the router anyway. A great budget 3D player, with some cool features, can't wait to see what other apps come out for it !!

Received this Samsung BD-D5500 3D Blu-ray device on Saturday, and is my first stand-alone 3D BD Player. Gone is my 'old' LG DVD Player... Will it be missed?

The design of the Samsung BD-D5500 is very nice, and is a pleasant replacement to my normal player. Both this, and the Samsung C750 3D is my first venture into the wonderful world of 3D at home. Yahoo!
The only bad side of this player so far, is the remote control. It isn't too ergonomically designed. The buttons aren't 'handily' located. BooHoo. Ok, good sides now - I bought a decent 1.4 cable for it. The quality of the movies are fantastic. No complaints so far.
And there is absolutely NO crosstalk seen at all. Very pleasing.

The best 3D movie seen so far here, is Ocean Wonderland - (Blu-ray 3D). It is visually stunning, and exactly what 3D is about. It is a benchmark to compare other movies to. It isn't the most riveting commentary, and it IS better when/if you just lower the volume and enjoy the display. Stunning, and it shows how spectacular 3D can be.
I look forward to there being many more 3D Blu-rays being made available. ;-)

Never having bought Samsung hardware before, I'd be more than likely to buy more, and I'd recommend it now. It's Amazon, so you KNOW it's safe. If you are thinking about 3D, you won't go wrong with this.
Samsung has now got a loyal customer here. Excellent job!
