Good basic blu ray player forget about internet apps 20 Jan 2011

If all you need is a blu ray / DVD player to link with your Samsung TV and maybe even play 3D films then fine this is the product for you. The internet apps are heavily promoted elsewhere and even here a little in the write up but don't bother they are rubbish and a complete mis-sell. No iplayer, no lovefilm (just a useless logo), no online service streaming new films etc. You get twitter and google maps plus some pointless little apps you'd be embarassed to find on a basic phone. File sharing will only work with a Samsung server application installed on your media source PC. Unless you really want to use the anynet+ function with your current Samsung go for the Sony BDPS570

I needed a new blu-ray player as the ps3 has to be moved into another room. Had a look at a few models and settled on this. I set it up a few days after Christmas to watch one of the new blockbusters. Half way through the movie the sound started to skip and pop, it got so bad we had to turn it off. Brought the ps3 back in to watch the end of the film on. I may have got a bad one, but I've since read that a few others have had the same issue. Another problem is the Internet@tv service, it was one of the things that attracted me to the product, after setting the player up I looked at the advertised services such as the ability to stream Blockbuster, Netflix, Pandora (and more) and also play monopoly. None of this is actually available, there is content but of the listed features only YouTube was available and it did work very well. I was really disappointed with this and I'm returning to amazon for a refund. I'm going to take the the similarly specced, more expensive Sony player instead. Buyer beware.

Promises more than it delivers 18 April 2011

This 3D Blu-ray Disc player with WiFi has been widely promoted on other sites as having iPlayer access through Samsung's Internet@TV feature. The name is misleading - Internet@TV allows you access to a selected set of applications that does not include a browser, and the YouTube viewer app is dismal, with no support for HD. Vimeo HD channel is well rendered. After months of waiting, iPlayer is finally available and great quality when it works, but the fast-forward and reverse and skip buttons have no effect - iPlayer says it's playing 2x, or 4x, or 8x, but goes its own sweet way at 1x. There's no way to skip 50 minutes of Formula 1 chat and get to the excellently-rendered HD (when available) action.
One good feature not mentioned above - 7.1 analogue audio outputs on phono (RCA) sockets allowing you to connect your older audio system if you don't have a digital audio set-up. A network socket is also available, if you don't want to trust to WiFi.
