This is one of the least expensive lenses in the Samsung range but is optically one of the best and actually betters the performance of many higher-priced zooms for other cameras. The best performing lens of the brand is currently the 85mm 1.4, a rather more expensive and very much heavier and bulkier item, but this is not far behind, providing exceptional performance regardless of zoom setting. Optically, it surpasses its larger 18-55 alternative although that is quite an excellent performer for a kit zoom, some others of which are barely usable. The lens has a few 'negative' features that may decide some against a purchase; it is collapsible and must be extended before use which may delay the initial shot, its speed of focussing may be slightly slower, it does not include any image stabilisation (the 18-55 does) and it has a plastic mount which is likely to be less long-lasting than the metal mount used on others of the range. The remainder of the body is also plastic but then so are almost all the other lenses in the range. It does help keep the price and weight down. Some Olympus Pen lenses also utilise plastic mounts and are also collapsible but have long been accepted.

There is some geometric distortion with this lens, especially at and around the 20mm zoom setting but it will usually be corrected in camera (in JPG only). If shooting in RAW format, it can be corrected in software when wholly essential but it may not be too noticeable in many scenes unless there are straight lines to expose the minor problem. Most wide angles have the same problem so it is not specific to this design.

Verified Purchase
Brought this to replace one that got broken. Good price second hand as well.
But only downside is the price of the new lenses. Brand new this is 150-200 pounds. I was lucky to get it for 100 thought
