Samsung SSD 850 EVO

Obtain High Caliber SSD Performance and Endurance Powered by 3D V-NAND Technology

Boasting the world's first 3D Vertical-NAND (V-NAND) SSD, the 850 EVO brings professional-caliber computing to the end consumer, designed for delivering optimised performance for everyday use. Whether you're an avid gamer or Internet surfer, you'll find that the 850 EVO is designed to deliver fast speeds. The 850 EVO also brings endurance and reliability to handle whatever task you throw at it.

Samsung’s 3D V-NAND flash memory architecture overcomes the density limitations, performance and endurance of conventional planar NAND architecture. 3D V-NAND is fabricated by stacking 32 cell layers vertically over one another rather than decreasing the cells dimensions and trying to fit itself onto a fixed horizontal space resulting in high density and performance utilising a smaller footprint.

Features

  • SATA 6Gb/s SSD for Client PCs
  • 2.5 inch form factor
  • Samsung 32 layer 3D V-NAND
  • Samsung Magician Software for SSD management
  • Samsung Data Migration Software

TurboWrite

The 850 EVO provides optimised performance for everyday computing use, delivering an over 10 percent improved user experience (UX) compared with its predecessor*. Equipped with TurboWrite technology, the 850 EVO provides random write speeds up to 1.9 times that of the 840 EVO in the 120/250 GB models**. TurboWrite technology accelerates write speeds by creating a high-performance write buffer in the SSD. First, data is transferred to the high-performance buffer at accelerated speeds. Then, when the write operation exceeds the size of the buffer during idle periods, the data is moved from the buffer to the primary storage region of the SSD at "after TurboWrite" speeds. The buffer size is optimised for everyday PC use and typically delivers TurboWrite accelerated speeds.

Enhanced RAPID Mode

If you need to kick into high gear, the RAPID mode puts the pedal to the metal - just like shifting gears in a car. Magician software gives you the ability to gain 2 times faster performance when shifting to the RAPID mode* by processing data on a system level using free PC memory (DRAM) as cache. The maximum memory in RAPID mode has increased from 1 GB, in the previous version, to up to 4 GB with the 850 EVO when implementing 16 GB of DRAM, for an enhanced UX. You'll experience performance and efficient command processing, depending on your PC's memory, which improves further with repetitive tasks. With accelerated speeds, you can vastly improve queue depth (QD) 1 random write performance to almost the same level as QD32 - achieving blazing-fast speeds.

Enhanced Reliability

When it comes to endurance, the 850 EVO won't quit before you do. The 850 EVO delivers enhanced reliability and improved sustained performance - up to 30 percent more than the previous 840 EVO model*. Samsung's V-NAND technology is built to handle up to 150 Terabytes Written (TBW), double that of the 840 EVO**.

Efficient Power Management

The 850 EVO boasts low idle power consumption rates. Considering that SSDs spend most of their time in idle mode, this is an extremely important factor in power efficiency. As a matter of fact, the 850 EVO fully supports the sleep mode on the Ultrabook, consuming only 2 m watts of power. Plus, it offers higher performance while consuming 25 percent less power* during write operations than the 840 EVO. The efficient power management of the 850 EVO is thanks to its 3D V-NAND technology, which consumes half the power of a 2D planar NAND.

Data Security

When you travel with your laptop, you not only need to safeguard your PC's hardware, but your personal data, as well. The 850 EVO's Self-Encrypting Drive (SED) technology will help keep your laptop safe, even if you lose it. The drive includes an AES-256-bit hardware-based, full disk encryption engine that secures your data without performance degradation, typically experienced with software-based encryption. The SED technology complies with the Trusted Computing Group (TCG) Opal v2.0 standards, protecting Physical Security ID (PSID), and is compatible with the Microsoft eDrive Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 1667 protocol. Samsung offers three security features you can choose from to suit your specific needs. Plus, you can erase or initialise data with the crypto erase service through customer service

Dynamic Thermal Guard

When you're totally immersed in your work or enthralled in a competitive video game, the last thing you want to have happen is for your computer to overheat. However, the 850 EVO won't let that happen thanks to its Dynamic Thermal Guard protection, which monitors and maintains the drive's optimal operating temperature. The throttle feature automatically drops the SSD's temperature when necessary to protect your data and ensure the responsiveness you expect. It keeps your PC cool, even if you overwork it - and you'll keep your cool, too.

End to End Integrated Solution

The NAND flash memory, the controller, the DRAM and the firmware are the four most crucial components of any SSD. And the integration of each of these components is critically important in designing a high-quality, long-lasting SSD you can rely on. Samsung designs all four of these components in-house. Samsung has intimate knowledge of every component and its parts. Therefore, it can fine-tune them at each stage of development to ensure they work seamlessly together. The result is enhanced performance with a 32-layer 3D V-NAND flash memory, lower power consumption with an up to 1GB LPDDR2 DRAM cache memory and improved energy-efficiency controller and firmware.

the package contains the disk and utility CD and warranty and manual. there are no extra cables included.
i bought this to replace an internal HD on a laptop and bought an enclosure with USB cable to clone existing disk to the SSD.

samsung cloning software works very well and is easy to use. select source disk and target disk and start copying.
Samsung also provide a utility, samsung magician, to optimize the disk after install. i have set mine up for Max reliability, although it can be set up for Max Performance or Max storage.

drive was easy to install and performance is very good. was apprehensive that it would not be recognized or boot files would be corrupted or missing, but there was no problem at all. boot up times have gone from 1m 45sec to around 45 seconds. the other biggest performance difference is in launching programs. Word and Excel just pop up in a second. people can get obsessed with the latest processors with the most cores, but often its other components that are the performance bottleneck and old hard disks are an obvious culprit.

i have a SATA2 (3Gbps) interface in my laptop, and its been a worthy performance upgrade for a reasonable price. no thoughts of replacing my laptop now for the next couple of years at least.

this drive supports SATA3 (6Gbps) and i imagine it would fly in something that supports that.

I bought this item after reading a review that changing an HDD to a SSD makes an unbelievable difference to the performance of a laggy PC/laptop. I had bought a laptop a couple years back with a reasonable specification which my wife was using or should I say trying to use. She only used it intermittently but on a decreasing time spiral because it was taking 10 minutes to boot open and she was constantly suffering the old spinning cursor syndrome.

I'd learned that Macbooks didn't suffer the performance issue due to the use of SSD's so I set about investigating buying a brand new laptop with an SSD installed.

I then learned that you could swap out an old hard drive (HDD) for a new SSD which allegedly would banish the spinning cursor woes of poor performance.

So I thought what the heck - let's try it.

I purchased a Sata/USB lead for a few pounds, downloaded a free cloning tool from CNET and the ordered this Samsung SSD which arrived yesterday.

I had cloned the drive and installed it inside 90 mins then the came the moment of truth - THE BIG SWITCH ON!!!

All I can say is WOW - what a difference - this laggy, slow running, nerve wrecking, frustration building machine has been transformed into a rocket ship.

I have just ordered another of these drives for my personal machine as it would be madness not to.

WOW what a difference in performance. I'm running Windows 7 Pro on a Lenovo 420T with Microsoft Office Pro, Adobe Acobate plus others all of which were running slow especially Outlook, when the app was loading . Now they load almost immediately. After cloning the hard dive with the supplied software don't forget to run its performance optimization feature it did make a difference on mine.

I've attached some charts to illustrate it's staged improved performance during the installation. Comparing the Read/Write IOPS and the Sequential Read/Write (MB/s), first on the HDD and then on the SSD before and after optimization. I did not see any difference in power consumption, my battery monitor showed 19 Watts before and after the upgrade.

Replaced the slow 500gb hard drive with this 500gb solid state drive last night.
Easy to do on these old upgradable models which can't be done on the new retina models.
To help you Mac users who are thinking of doing the same thing this is what I had to do.

Most important it to make sure to have an up-to-date time machine backup. If you haven't, first attach a new USB external harddrive and let time machine format it and back up your entire system.

Once that is done turn off the Mac and unscrew the back casing. Unscrew the four screws that surround the hard drive and remove the plastic strip that holds the harddrive down.
Gently remove the connector to the motherboard and take the 4 torx holders out of the old harddrive and put them into the SSD Either with a torx screwdriver or gently with pliers. Place into the Mac and put the connector and screws back into place.
Put your time machine USB lead into the Mac and turn on the Mac. The Mac will boot up from the time machine backup and will take you to a utilities screen which will allow you to restore from time machine backup.
As the ssd comes blank, you will first have to format it to Mac by selecting the disk utility and selecting erase. Erase the Samsung ssd and then go back to the time machine restore. Select the lastest backup to restore from and select your newly formatted ssd.
That's it- after an hour or so your Mac will reboot and everything will be as it was apart from a massive speed increase.

Currently on Mac OS X Yosemite TRIM can't be turned on without hacking but that has been sorted with the next Mac OS X so nothing to worry about.

Great drive great price.
