This is my second Samsung, having gone back to the brand after an uncomfortable three years with a Toshiba. After just a few weeks this is proving to have been a good purchase. The x420 is lightweight and a comfortable size, being thin enough to slip into any briefcase, and although predominantly plastic, with a little flex, the chassis seems sturdy and there is no flex in the lid. The battery lives up to the claims in the sense of lasting long enough for a full day's work between charges, although you can't really go by the predicted life given by hovering over the battery icon. The specification seems very well chosen for Windows 7. The processor seems fast enough for the tasks I set it, including a degree of multi-tasking of office programs. I don't use it for anything very ambitious. The inclusion of a DVD external drive is a boon and beats most direct competitors for this type of machine. The keyboard is good, although I am used to a slightly different layout so am having to adapt. The keys are a convenient size and easy to type on, if very slightly clattery compared with some. It is better than most. The screen is a highlight, being bright and clear. The shiny surface picks up dust and prints, and is not great in sun - but who gets sun in Scotland? I am still getting used to the multi-touch trackpad, which sometimes does not seems as responsive as I might like, but suspect that this is down to set-up sensitivity. I'll try adjustments when I have time.
Overall, I am very pleased.
