I'll happily spend a little more on my tech purchases, but I expect them to last me a long time. I agonised over this purchase for a while as I was hoping Samsung would improve this nearly perfect laptop with the latest 4th gen Intel Haswell processors, but oh well.

So, previous laptop was a Sony Vaio TZ. Light and portable, though not exactly a powerhouse. I have a desktop for home use but need a portable machine for when i'm on the move.
What I like about this laptop:

It's 13" screen and has a good 1920x1080 resolution screen. It's ridiculous that laptops around this price point were still coming in with 1366x768 resolution screens - the same as my old Vaio TZ which i bought in 2007! Thankfully now more and more devices are coming out with at least 1920x1080 if not higher resolution screens. Though the usefulness of a higher than 1920x1080 resolution screens below 13" is debatable.
It does have a standard HDMI out, and some kind of samsung proprietary mini VGA. No adapter in the box, but i dont think i'll be using this device for that purpose.

The touch screen is fairly good. Has multitouch and if you've been using windows 8 for a while, you'll have become accustomed to jabbing the screen occasionally. It's nice to have it in addition to the very large trackpad. The only downside to touch screens is that they rarely come in any other option than a glossy screen. Distracting reflections if there's a bright light source behind you. Finger prints do not stand out much though until you turn the device off.

It has an ethernet port! Perhaps this wont matter for a lot of people now, but WiFi isn't always an option, and as a power user, I like to have an additional network avenue.

I wanted a small portable machine which had enough grunt to run virtual machines and which didn't necessitate carrying round all manner of peripheral devices to plug into projectors, network ports, hdmi screens etc. This was the only ultrabook that met the spec.

As it comes, what you get for your £999, it's brilliant. The sdd is quick, the cpu very capable and the ram (4GB) is perfectly adequate. It runs windows really well, the touch screen allows you to see what Windows8 is all about and the battery will last around 7 hours. It's portable and elegant as well as being sturdily constructed. Index scores are CPU 6.9, RAM 7.2, Graphics 5.8, Gaming Graphics (3D) 6.4, SDD 6.9.

I work in an environment where everyone uses macs. They love to pour scorn on any windows machines but honestly struggle to have anything to say about this ultrabook. And I haven't even got to the best bit I said I wanted to run a number of VMs. The case is designed to allow easy access to standard sized parts. They haven't glued anything together or soldered it to stop you upgrading.

So I installed a larger sdd - 240GB and some RAM. Because this ultrabook has a standard msata sdd you can replace it easily. You can go up to 1TB if you have the money. And there are two RAM slots, only one of which is filled on shipping. So it will take up to 16GB of RAM - which is what I gave it. The result is a machine which can do it all and weighs nothing so I can take it everywhere I go. I run two operating systems native, that is window8 and lubuntu with an Arch VM running in Windows.

It's everything I could have hoped for.

When I bought the machine I umed and arred about spending over £900 on an ultrabook but honestly it's great value because it is so much more than something to surf the net. Can't recommend enough.
