Samsung 840 EVO SSD

Enjoy High Performance

The Samsung SSD 840 EVO is a high-performance SSD designed for power users. Capable of delivering up to 98,000 IOPS Random Read Speed and 540MB/s Sequential Read speed, it is an SSD of unrivaled high performance. Even better, the advanced MEX controller delivers these speeds regardless of data type, unlike some competing controllers that greatly favour compressible data.

TurboWrite
Boost your write speed with Samsung TurboWrite technology.
Switch to a higher gear
Magician software gives you the option of RAPID mode.
Always be in High Acceleration

Thanks to Samsung TurboWrite technology, Samsung SSD 840 EVO can deliver much faster sequential write speeds compared to the previous model -- up to tripling the speed from 130 to 410MB/s in 120 GB drives, and doubling it from 250 to 520MB/s in 250 GB drives.

Switch to a High Gear for Rapid Performance

Like changing gears in a car, with Magician software you have the option of RAPID mode, enhancing performance by processing data on a system level through the use of free PC memory (DRAM) as a cache. Depending on your PC memory, you can expect high performance and more efficient command processing, which improves with repeated tasking.

Keep your data safe
Self Encrypting Drive (SED) security technology helps keep your data safe.
Dynamic Thermal Guard protection
Dynamic Thermal Guard protection monitors the temperature of your SSD.
Consistent Reliability

Shocks, vibrations, high temperatures -- bring it on. Equipped with Advanced Signal Processing, Samsung SSD 840 EVO automatically corrects errors so you'll worry less about your data's stability. Plus, using Samsung Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology (SMART), you can track your SSD's health status. SMART warns you of any unforeseen errors before they occur, so you'll be prepared.

Samsung's Dynamic Thermal Guard protection monitors the temperature of the SSD, preventing it from overheating. When the SSD is exposed to extreme temperatures, the algorithm controls the SSD's power supply to keep it cool. Plus, with Samsung SSD 840 EVO your PC becomes lighter, meaning you can carry it around with you.

Samsung 840 EVO SSD
Add style to your PC.
Rock-solid Encryption to Secure Your Data

Samsung 840 EVO Self Encrypting Drive (SED) security technology will help keep your data safe at all times. The drive is included an AES 256-bit hardware-based encryption engine to ensure that your personal files remain secure -- even if you lose your laptop.

Energy Efficient

Enjoy doing more of what you love on your computer for longer. Samsung 840 EVO SSD features low idle power consumption. This is important because PCs spend 80 to 90 per cent of their time sitting idle. The drive promotes energy savings and longer battery life.

Simple Tools for an Easy Upgrade

Using a SATA-to-USB 3.0 connector provided in the laptop upgrade package, for a data size of 100 GB, you can migrate all the data from your HDD to 840 EVO in just 24 minutes. The Auto Install guide included in the toolkit will guide you smoothly through the installation process.

Add Style to Your PC

Samsung 840 EVO SSD uses both structural engineering and C-cutting to diamond-cut the premium titan surface, for a sleek and stylish appearance. Watch your PC become reborn with a premium look that expresses its powerful performance.

The Samsung 840 EVO 1TB is definitely a blazing fast SSD. I do feel that SSD drives in general are still slightly overpriced when considering the fact that these are now mainstream, and no longer belonging to a niche market. Yet to be fair, it could still work out as a much cheaper option than buying a new laptop or desktop computer.

The SSD in my review is mounted on a desktop running Windows 7 (64bit), i7 processor with 16GB RAM. My motherboard does not support SATA 3 yet the speed increment is astounding!! Windows 7 actually starts in 7 seconds!!

Pros:
- Lightning fast drive
- Super easy installation
- Light on batteries (for laptop users)
- "Samsung Magician" software works great for firmware updates and SSD optimization. The software also gives you 4 options: Max Performance/ Max Capacity / Max Reliability / Advanced.
- Macbook Pro compatible. I had issues with other SSD drives, yet I bought a smaller EVO to fit in the macbook and it workes a treat

Prior to mentioning the cons, I would like to point out that these apply to most SSD and not just the Samsung.

Cons:
- Samsung recommends turning off indexing for reliability. Doing so means that you can no longer search for files from the "Search programs or files". See Photo.

Considerations:
- In order to use the drive to its full potential, AHCI Mode must be enabled in the bios, and motherboard should support SATA 3.
- The 1TB SSD is recommended as one of the features Samsung software offer is Over Provisioning. A part of the SSD itself is used for this option thus decreasing the physical size of the disk. The Magician Software itself says:
Quote "Over Provisioning (OP) optimizes the performance and lifespan of your SSD" unquote.

It was great at first but things started getting slower, at first I though that I was just getting used to the speed. But it turned out that the driver has a slow down bug, over time older data will become slower to read, dropping as lower as 60MB/s

Samsung have not made a statement on this issue.

Well it has completely transformed my 2011 macbook pro. boot times, applications everything just run so fast now, well worth the money. I installed it myself and I'm no tech expert, there are plenty of videos on youtube telling you how to do this. I wanted to clone my original hard drive onto the ssd and this is how i done it:

1. time machine back up of my mac onto external hard drive (must be larger 500gb)
2. create a bootable usb (more than 8gb) drive with mavericks on it (plenty of videos on youtube).
3. insert the new ssd into the mac, be careful because the screws holding on the case are very sensitive and when i was taking a couple out i didn't have enough pressure on them and so rounded the heads of the screws, which made them a nightmare to get out.
4. insert bootable usb and boot up your mac, then reinstall os mavericks.
5. then use migration assistant on mac to copy everything over from your time machine back up so your mac looks exactly like it did with your old hard drive.

I really can't recommend this enough, before, i was always cleaning my RAM to make my mac faster but now with this installed i dont even have to touch it. It runs a lot faster than it did when it was new.

Samsung have been making SSD's for a few years now. They have just brought these "EVO" drives out using a triple NAND arrangement for the storage cells. This has brought down costs and opened the market up for the home enthusiast. HOWEVER, there is a problem with the firmware on ALL EVO SSD's. The longer a file is untouched, the slower it loads. These drives are supposed to run at 400-500MBs, but some files (as they age on the drive) can load as slowly as 6MBs! This is disgusting, and Samsung are dragging their feet about fixing it. They claim not to be able to reproduce the problem but many of us in overclockers.co.uk and overclock.net have run many benchmarks and all of us have come to the same conclusion - there is a definite "slowdown over time" problem with these drives - AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

First off this is amazing compared to a mechanical drive. I'm currently using it in a SATA2 port and it works great, the mechanical drive can copy and paste 12GB in about 10-30mins, this will do it in 60s (that is copy pasting to the same drive). Transferring 12GB between my mechanical and SSD is somewhere in the middle. It also comes with samsung magician which is a great bit of software for optimizing your SSD.

Boot times are so fast and just generally everything is running much faster, not to waffle on but if you're on the fence about getting an SSD then fret no more, this is a great buy. All I can say is make sure you optimize the drive properly to get to most out of it (speed and lifespan)

I bought this item with the Quantek SSD mounting bracket as they are both shipped from amazon so you will get them at the same time, it also looks quite nice :)

PS: If you're using a motherboard a few years old like my GA-P55-USB3 then it is recommended you install AHCI drivers before the OS as apparently it can corrupt your OS if you try to do it after, you'll have to have a read online a bit to know what to do. I didn't do this but had no problem activating AHCI mode after I had installed the OS
