A great mike with clear and acurate sound and a very satisfying design. The tripod legs fold up around the mike body and it can be stored safely in the supplied velvet pouch. The chrome body looks good and feels solid. The USB connection means that (under Windows) it is self installing. The incorporated headphone socket above the USB port means that monitoring is achieved with the minimum of wires.

After much deliberation on which USB mic to buy, I finally settled on the Samson Meteor over it's bigger and more expensive rival, the Blue Yeti. Both are high-end consumer mics, offering the best in their price range for sound quality. The Blue Yeti is stereo and offers different multiple pickup patterns, so may interest those looking to create a soundscape, or record live bands or conferences, for example. But for pure sound quality, the Samson Meteor delivers and actually has a larger condenser diaphragm (25mm) than most, including the Blue Yeti. Which one you should buy ultimately depends on your needs, but if you're looking to record your voice or an instrument at close quarters, then I can assure you the Meteor is worth it.

The range of frequencies captured by the Meteor is pretty incredible, with a rich, full overall sound. Listening to the Meteor's output in comparison to recordings I'd made using a (pretty expensive) PC headset mic, the difference is obvious, especially in the clarity and bass response. You'll probably find that when recording with this mic, sound capture is best when sitting about 20cm away, but naturally, you can adjust the mic's audio levels on your computer. Sensitivity-wise, if set high enough the Meteor will pick up aeroplanes flying overhead, cars passing outside, TV from the neighbouring apartment - spookily, mine has even picked up noises I didn't hear myself. Most people won't need this level of sensitivity and it's simply a case of adjusting the mic's level to suit you.

A blue light on the front of the Meteor will helpfully turn red if you're too loud, indicating sound distortion, allowing you to work out the best position and volume. The headphone jack is at the Meteor's rear, above the USB input.

Short and sweet:

-The quality is incredible, and in such a small and beautiful package too.
-Failed to work after a few days

Longer explanation:

Like others on here though mine was failing to be recognised after a few days by the PC, and what with it having no drivers (plug and play) you can't update it to make it work. I have to believe that it was just a faulty mic as most people are fine with theirs, with only a few of us having problems with it being not detected after a few days/weeks of use. My PC is fairly new, with good quality parts, so I don't think it's that causing the issue. I think It's something to do with Windows and the way it interfaces with the mic. (Running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit)

Also it came in German packaging which made me question it's integrity from travelling - German on the box, German on the instructions, which didn't help...

I have read in forums that people opened the casing up and found it was a loose solder point, and once they had repaired the solder connection it was fine - but I didn't want to go fiddling around.

I may even try buying another some time in the future in hopes that it was just a bad piece of hardware, as it was incredible quality for the price and was small enough to fit on my desk without getting in the way.

I sent it back and got my money back, so I can't fault them for any customer service reasons.

The gamble is probably worth it, as again, the quality is great, but I guess it's just your luck if it works out?

Wow, this is an amazing piece of hardware.

From the packaging, every detail was taken care of. It's really a great work of design. The casing is metal, shiny and sturty; the tripod is quite snug, and there are some soft "paws" on it that give placing this on a desk that extra smooth feel. And they certainly help with any (small) vibrations, too.

Using it was just plug and play, which is fantastic. Just bear in mind that windows will probably configure it as the default audio playing device as well as recording, so you might want to change that.

As for the sound quality, I'll post this here: https://soundcloud.com/luiz_silveira/meteor-test1

Two thumbs up.

I LOVE this mic - It's my little baby! I bought it for recording music with an I-PAD 2 and it is just brilliant - The sound quality is the best I've heard with a USB mic or any other mic for this price actually. Once word of advice to anyone wanting to use it with an I-PAD- Make sure you get the official Apple camera USB adaptor. I had terrible problems with the mic switching itself off after 2 minutes when I was using an unofficial adapter - Drove me mad until I figured out it was the adapter!

I was hugely excited to get my hands on this mic, particularly after reading all the positive reviews both on amazon and other websites.

I bought the mic to record vocals. It was incredibly easy to set up and worked well with my recording software. The sound was good quality and professional. However, around 20 minutes after I had plugged it in to my computer a message appeared to say, "USB Device not recognised" plus a further message to say that the device had malfunctioned.

I tried all the usual tricks with no luck (turning off/on; trying equipment on different computers; searching for driver updates; new cable etc etc). I then did an extensive google search to try and establish what had happened. I found no solutions but did find reports from many other people of this exact same fault having occurred soon after purchasing their own meteor mics.

I have arranged to return the mic although sadly it is now too late to get my hands on another one before the deadline I had to complete my recording this weekend. I am also reluctant to purchase the same model after reading that this is a common fault (and there seems to be no explanation from Samson who just recommend using windows software to troubleshoot usb ports - this did not fix the problem).

So I am off to search for a new mic and have a little cry!! On a positive note, if you end up with a meteor mic that works you are in for a treat as prior to it's kapoot I thought it was fab!
