Product Description

C01U USB Studio Condenser Microphone

The C01U USB Studio Condenser Mic is the first affordable studio condenser mic with a USB interface.

First and still the best

This classic USB microphone bridges the gap between mid-level USB audio adapters and pro-line products that require additional drivers, special software, and/or excess cabling. The C01U is USB compatible with any Mac or PC, as well as most DAW software programs, including GarageBand. Its supreme ability to produce pristine audio recordings with ease and mobility, along with a desktop mic stand, mic clip, USB cable and carry pouch also included, makes the C01U a most valuable addition to any studio.

Music Manager

For musicians, the convergence of computer and audio technologies has established the home/mobile studio as an alternative to the professional recording facility. Whether you're touring the country or experimenting in your project studio, the C01U sets the standard for integrating your computer into your recording experience. Use the cardioid pickup pattern to record vocals or close-mic an acoustic instrument at a pro-level directly to your computer. The C01U is perfect for recording music on-the-go or in limited spaces, allowing all musicians tremendous freedom to create.

Podcaster's Producer

The evolution of podcasting has created a need for high-quality production capabilities that are also attainable by everyone. Satisfying these criteria, the C01U is a podcaster's dream come true. Given a simple USB connection straight into your computer, it provides your podcasts with unparalleled quality in audio recording. With the C01U affordable for all, the voices of web journalists are empowered to establish a real identity in the congested world of podcasting.

Samson offers a collection of pro-level accessories (all sold separately) that can be used to further enhance the recording experience of the C01U, including the PS01 microphone pop filter and the SP01 spider mount. The PS01's nylon mesh screen will reduce vocal popping and sibilance from affecting the performance of your C01U. It also comes equipped with a universal mic stand mounting bracket and a flexible metal gooseneck for convenient placement. Lastly, the SP01 provides the C01U with a reliable shockmount system to absorb unwanted vibrations and disturbances.

This microphone comes with Cakewalk's Sonar LE digital audio workstation software.

  • Plug-and-play, with no drivers needed
  • Hypercardioid pickup pattern
  • 16-bit, 48kHz resolution
  • Smooth, flat frequency response of 20Hz - 18kHz
  • Solid, die-cast construction with heavy gauge mesh grill
  • Includes swivel stand mount and USB cable

Dead easy USB, runs direct from Vista drivers, with superb results - EVERYTIME.

Using Audacity, free software to record podcasts.

the recordings are clean, clear and excellent quality.

Faultless performance from this mic.

Has a Cardioid(heart shaped frontal direction), Omni (all directions) and a figure of 8, so that it picks up you and the person you're facing for interviewing.

Good off axis performance, so you can move up to 18 inches from the mic and maintain clear recordings. Some mics limit your movement, this one doesn't.

Slight plosives (p's and b's), so use a windshield, or put some popsocks over the mic (dont' laugh, popsocks really work!). Especailly when set to maximum sensitivity.

Two points.
1. Stand fittings are european (smaller) and American (larger). Undo the US fittings and the European fittings are underneath them. But they don't tell you that! So you'll spend 10 mins or so working out how the stand thing fits together, unless you know about the preinstalled US screwmount.

2. It comes preset with the recording level set to 3. This is very quiet.
to change go to start/control panel/sound/recording/[select micrphone]/properties/levels [slide from 3 to 90]
Now stand back. It will record airplanes flying overhead, dogs barking in the street, the whole lot, even gurgling in your radiators. Superb sensitivity. This way it picks up every nuance in your voice, every inflection.

Good mic for female voices. Some mics are optimise for deeper male voices, this has a Radio 4 daytime bright/clean professional feel.

So if you want Radio 4 clarity, airy, clean, beautiful midtones, you'll be dead happy. Also it's a dream for podcasters. Literally plug and play, with Vista. And lets face it, so little works with Vista, that's a huge bonus!

For the price, you get a very good microphone. I purchased it for around £60, and I didn't have very high hopes, I was looking for something to record a loud drum kit with. When I got it, I thought, oh well, it will just be super loud and distorted like cameras and other cheap mic's I've tried, I might as well try it before I send it back. When I did record it, the quality was super. Now, I was playing a super loud drum kit, in a bare untreated room with pretty poor acoustics- And I got a clean, distortion clear recording which could pass off as being recorded by a mic three times the cost. I'm very impressed. Just imagine how good it could sound in a decent room...

Also it connects to your laptop/computer via USB, so you don't need to buy XLR cables and mixers and interfaces- Easy, simple, cheap and gives a very impressive sound recording.

I was really surprised when i got it out the box, it was a good big metal solid piece of sturdy kit, very easy to use (I'm not the quickest with these things but I had the hang of it in about 2 minutes on my friend's windows vista computer (though it took me half an hour on my clapped out banger laptop))

You really do just shove it in and it works(hopefully). I DL'd a program called "samson softpre" from the company's website, which made it work a lot more sensitively too.

The only real problem I have is that it picks up the cooling fan noise on my laptop...but thats not the fault of the microphone!

Sound quality is really pretty damn good, speaking singing playing guitar banjo piano, making childish flatulence noises, everything i've tried so far has sounded good on it.

It comes with Sonar LE Cakewalk...Cakewalk is what most people in the recording industry use I believe, and its bundled in with the microphone, installs easily and quickly.

Don't waste time buying a stand for it, it comes with one!

The only real alternative i've found to this is the MXL desktop recording kit, which does appear to be a bit better (such as the stereo recording), but its not worth paying twice the price for IMO.

Samson C01U: £50;solid kit;useful software;easy to use; stand included

best recording deal around...

This was a surprise present for my daughter who composes and records personal tracks on the computer. She had explained the type of microphone she wanted and they were all mega pricey. Anyway I heard her talking about Samson microphones and saw this on Amazon.
She was realy pleased with it. It definitely has a good quality pickup. At one point it caught me cackling like a witch in another room watching TV.

It is chunky and heavy, and fitted perfectly on the microphone stand that my daughter already had. My daughter is really pleased with its quality, no hissing and no distortion.

I could go into long detail about its performance, but i'll just cut to the chase.

I'm an artist and i needed a mic. This mic is clear and it sounds like a professional studio mic.

Just remember to turn up the volume when you plug it in and fix the MONO/STEREO settings so that you hear yourself from both channels of the speaker.

That being said, Great buy.

I use it to record my acoustic guitar and its very loud and clear. Make sure you turn up the mic volume by going to control panel - sound - recording.
