Review

The work allows for teaching feminist teaching as well as Puritan background to English literature. The notes are excellent, very helpful to me as well as to the students."--Pau Sheneman, Miami University

First Sentence
TRAGEDY, as it was anciently composed, hath been ever held the gravest, moralest, and most profitable of all other Poems: therefore said by Aristotle to be of power by raising pity and fear, or terror, to purge the mind of those and such like passions, that is, to temper and reduce them to just measure with a kind of delight, stirr'd up by reading or seeing those passions well imitated. Read the first page

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for Students 10 April 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I'm a graduate student at the University of Central Florida. I found this book to be the best edition of Milton's Samson Agonistes I've ever seen. It's so good my professor offered to buy it from me. Every page is glossed, and the author provided critical commentary in the back of the book. This book is worth every penny!

5.0 out of 5 stars Well bound 21 Mar 2007
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Putting aside the very very wonderfulness of the poem itself, I feel as though I must comment on the quality of this edition. It is extremely durable, easy to read, and pocket-sized too: so far I have written an exam and am writing an essay on SA, and the spine shows not even the slightest sign of a crease. £8.50 may sound like a lot for a relatively short poem - but by jiggery, it's worth it!

THIS SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM AMAZON.

I wanted to tear this book to shreds after 10 minutes of reading. A better use would be to recycle it for paper. I don't bother writing reviews, but this book was so bad I felt it was impossible not to warn others about it. As a student of English Literature at university, I would never, ever, use it as a source even to inform me of the general plot. The four star reviews are only applicable to the original editions of 1969 from the Oxford University Press. What you order, however, is a scan published by General Books LLC, Memphis, USA. You can only find this out if you click on the picture.

The amount of typos is infuriating. Dozens or more on almost every page. Sometimes words are missing half the letters, or become mixed with random letters. Eg.

Suffices thatjojnejtrentgh ismybang,
C/oul.
And proves the source...'

I can't even work out what line this should be because of the layout; sometimes it adds line numbers at the end of some lines, but because it's set out in three columns, the lines are often broken up just to fit the column. It should read (Project Gutenberg)

Suffices to me that strength is my bane,
And proves the sourse [sic]...'

There is absolutely nothing that remotely suggests an extra word like 'C/oul.' The first word of the first line in the play is already a typo: 't. [sic] A little onward...'.

Sometimes a sentence in the introduction will finish mid-sentence, even mid-word. The continuation may not exist, but sometimes it pops up in the middle of a sentence, a few paragraphs later.

The introduction has no separation from the play itself in the form of a new paragraph or line break , and you almost miss the distinction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless! Superb! 22 May 2012
By Big
Format:Kindle Edition
Samson Agonistes is not merely epic poetry that is among the finest ever written, it is also a cri de coeur of a poet who has seen his most fervent dreams dashed asunder by the grinding tides of politics and life. Seldom has a poet poured his heart and soul into a work as profoundly and as deeply as John Milton has in this work. In my opinion it is as moving today, in the digital age, as it was back when first written.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very poor edition 14 Feb 2011
Format:Paperback
This edition of Samson Agnosties was incredibly poorly edited, if at all, and was full of incorrect punctuation. I would not recommend this product.
