This book seemed to have potential at first glance, but it lets itself down in several critical points. Firstly the text can appear patronising, for example how many times do we have to be told that END finishes the app? Also the book doesnt go into anything like enough detail on important aspects such data storage and wastes much time upon areas such as grpahics which the average student programmer does not need. Also my learned friend from Birmingham, has an excellent point about the thrid part controls.

This book started off reasonably well. Taking the reader through examples. At the back of the book there is a page of screen shots showing you what you will create during the book. But half of these programs need to be created using third party contrals which you have to buy seperately to finish the book! I would definately not have bought this book if it mentioned this anywhere on the cover. I DO NOT RECCOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYBODY!

My first steps in Visual Basic programming were taken with this book. Actually it gave me the basics about controls, forms,VB code, multimedia programming, file access code and other features. At that time this book was enough for me. But after some years I feel a lack about VB. So I tell you: this is not the best book about VB basics, mainly if you are a programmer.
