4.0 out of 5 stars Good intro to sql for beginners 19 Oct 2001
    Format:Paperback
This was my first book on SQL and I found it very useful. The examples are clearly explained, although a little brief at times. The book is based on the microsoft sql server 2000 product range, whereas other books which I have looked at where a little bit more general. Overall, a good read although you will need another book if you want detailed explanations of the enterprise manager and wizard functionality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent intro to SQL Server 2000 26 Dec 2005
    Format:Paperback
As the previous reviewer stated, this book is very centered on SQL Server 2000; the title of the book, 'Teach Yourself SQL Server 2000 in 21 Days' is kind of obvious in that respect. This book is not a SQL tutorial; it focuses mainly on aspects of installation, usage, and database administration as they pertain to SQL Server 2000. If you are looking for a SQL language tutorial, this book is probably more than you need though it does contain an excellent but brief SQL tutorial.

As for teaching SQL Server 2000, this book does so superbly. It doesn't assume that you're a programmer or that you know much about databases but it does assume prior experience with computing. I purchased a copy nearly five years ago when I was just getting started with SQL Server and this book didn't leave my side for weeks. By the time I finished, I had a SQL server up and running with reliable backups and easy admin tasks, and was using it for a practical purpose. The sections on using XML with SQL Server were a little thin, but the information has probably been updated in a subsequent version between 2001 and now. Despite the thinness on this subject, I had my SQL server producing data in a usable XML format and a website calling a stored procedure that used XML.

I highly recommend this book if you're interested in the administrative aspects of running a database. It may also be useful for developers who want to know more about database administration. If all you need is to learn the SQL language for simple queries, this book is overkill; and if you want to know about Oracle or MySQL, this is obviously not the book for you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to SQL Server 2000 19 Feb 2001
    By ad_crumenam - Published on Amazon.com
    Format:Paperback
If you are an absolute SQL Server 2000 beginner but understand (basically) what a database is, this is the book for you. I have no experience in programming or SQL, and I've been able to ramp up VERY quickly with SQL Server, creating databases, tables, queries, and stored procedures with ease using the examples. The book is clearly laid out and has good examples. However, it IS a book about the server itself, not programming SQL. It contains a great deal of information on using ALL of the features included in SQL Server 2000. If all you want to do is learn to do is write queries, you might want to skip this and go for a book with a more narrow focus. This book's treatment of SQL Server is very broad.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great For Developers & Administrators New To SQL Server 23 July 2002
By David Gurgel - Published on Amazon.com
    Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am a mechanical engineer and have rolled my own applications and done much of the systems administration for twenty years for my small online services company. Working on an ambitious .NET project and with little previous experience with SQL Server, I wanted to get comfortable with the physical implementation of relational data bases while I was still doing the logical data base design using Embarcadero. This book met all my needs and was enjoyable to read.

The book has 850 pages and has a CD with a 120-day evaluation copy of SQL Server 2000. The code for the exercises is available for downloading from the SAMS site. The organization is chronological, with steps ordered pretty much as you would do them if you were installing, setting up and administering a new SQL Server installation. You should be comfortable in a Windows 2000 or NT environment and have done some prior work with a database before attempting this book which is written for computer professionals.

The book did not seem like a typical SAMS Teach Yourself book, which are very useful as tutorials but often poorly arranged and indexed as references. This book together with the exhaustive and detailed SQL Server Books Online (the Microsoft SQL Server manual on the CD) will be all of the references you will need for physical data base design and administration. You will need other references for logical design of a relational data base and for the other platform technologies such as ASP.NET and VB.NET that you may use to do a full application.

I was pleased with the exercises. Each stood alone for the most part, allowing me to jump around a bit and still do those exercises that were useful to me. I was also pleased with the section on security. Security is a subject that I usually dread, but here it was covered in some detail but very clearly.

The author is a senior Microsoft SQL Server team member.

Excellent book for beginners. I passed my MCP exam using this book. However there are some concepts like replication and data warehousing which are not covered in detail.
