2.0 out of 5 stars Far too many errors 17 Sep 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I like the format of this book - I know some SQL from my work as a Systems Administrator and used this book to fill in the gaps.

However the code and exercises are so riddled with errors that I would not recommend it for a beginner - it is likely to confuse them when they get error messages or their answers don't tally with those given in the book. I've found mistakes in every section I've read up to now.

If you've got a bit of background in SQL or done some programming you'll probably spot the mistakes and correct them fairly easily.

An example of a typical error (Pages 84 and 85 - Manipulating data):

LAST_NAME FIRST_NAME SSN PHONE
SMITH JOHN 312456788 3174549923
ROBERTS LISA 232118857 3175452321
SMITH SUE 443221989 3178398712
PIERCE BILLY 310239856 3176763990

What would happen if the following statements were run?

k.
update employee_tbl
set last_name = 'CONRAD'
set first_name = 'LARRY'
where ssn = '313546078';

My answer: Nothing - because there is no entry in the example table with that SSN.

Book answer: JOHN SMITH is now LARRY CONRAD.

It is admirable that they've tried to cover all of the main implementations - but some examples are given in only one implementation which leaves you at a bit of a dead end if you want to try it out.

This book has clearly never been proofed properly. On that basis I find it hard to recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read it three times 3 Dec 2012
By Nicole R. Norton - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Great intro to SQL if you're interested. You're not really going to learn this in 24 hours, but take your time and read it cover-to-cover at least three times - once for exposure, then a second time to really learn it, and a third time to pick up anything you didn't quite understand until you actually got some real hands-on experience.

3.0 out of 5 stars I'd recommend it. 24 Mar 2014
By Brian Mendicino - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is an easy read, and does a great job of explaining many of the basic SQL concepts to the reader. However, the examples in the book are littered with errors. Minor errors usually aren't a big deal, but when you're coding stuff, all it takes is one thing typed incorrectly to ruin whatever it is you're doing. I'm about half way through this book and find something wrong in at least one exercise in every chapter. I've had SQL practice in the past, so I'm able to recognize/work through the errors without too much difficulty, but someone new might not pick up on it being an error and think they've done something wrong.

Great book if you are a beginner or have not written SQL in a few years. It has been three years since I wrote SQL, so this has been a good book to refer to get rolling again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beginners Guide 6 Aug 2013
By K Wallace - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Great book for those new to SQL with no formal training.
Those with some exposure, but want more details, this could be a decent book for your.

Book does not give a lot of examples, but those that are there can be helpful for the beginner.
Those intermediate users .. this is not for you unless you want a refresher self-study course.

I am in the process of working thru this book and find it clear and easy to follow. The exercises help reinforce the topics and they build upon each other very well. Would recommend.
