A great book to learn how to plan your database and set it up, although I used a different program from the ones in the book. The book covers little to no data on extraction of data from the database, but this can be easily picked up by looking at the coding in a program such as phpbb

The basic structure and content is good

In 2009-2010 this book is one of two being used as part of the fourth part of the Open University's Web Applications Development course. Despite its age, it's obviously been assessed by their experts and chosen as a good book to use for students to learn MySQL as part of the world of online databases.

The way the book is structured, with each 'hour' being a well-planned chunk of learning, makes it very straightforward. I found while learning MySQL that it was essential to keep skipping backs and forwards through the book to remind yourself and check on things, and the arrangement made that very easy.

The only downside is that this edition (2002) is a little out of date. There have been subtle developments in SQL syntax in later versions which you'll have to find out for yourself via the Internet. The browsers referred to are also somewhat dated (for example Netscape Navigator instead of Firefox). It's nothing major and shouldn't get in the way of your learning.

I just wish that it was a real 24 hours, and not 24 x 1-hour lessons. Then the first seven hours would have been blank and entitled 'sleeping', hour 13 would have been 'lunch' and been quite tasty, and the later hours would have gradually got more and more blurry until the final hour which would have been entitled 'time to leave the pub'.

A great place to start with MySQL.

I've used this book for my final year of university a few years back, and I still keep it in my drawer at work for reference every now and again. So for me this book has been a valuable resource. The textbook is split into chapters focusing on specific areas regarding MySQL and how it could be applied in real situations. The author explains the underlying theories extremely well before demonstrating this through practical examples, quizzes and exercises at the end of each chapter, this equates to about an hour each. The context is well paced and spaced over each chapter, which is perfect if you are just starting out. Be aware though if you expecting it to cover interactions between PHP and MySQL, or extraction with a web language, you will probably benefit better in accompanying this with a another web language or PHP focussed textbook. This textbook will guide you through in planning the foundations of database design and give you advice on when and how techniques should be used to interact with your database.
