Product Description

Linux is an operating system, based on Unix that has become a viable desktop system for many users, especially those involved with system and network administration. Red Hat Linux has remained a leading choice of Linux distributions for years, owning more than 80 percent of the U.S. Linux market.

This book covers all the most important topics for the reader who wants to get Red Hat Linux up and running and to become productive with the operating system as quickly as possible. The books covers topics such as installing, setting up, and negotiating the new desktop environment, and also includes:

  • An explanation of what is happening behind the scenes--the reader learns how the system works as well as what to do, in simple, layman's language.
  • Special attention to new features of the latest Red Hat release, especially tools that make tasks that used to be difficult easier.
  • Instruction on troubleshooting practices and debugging tools.
  • A comprehensive list of all major places to get Linux support and answers.

When searching for a book to introduce me to linux, this seemed ideal. It comes with two CDs contained "Red Hat Linux 9, Publisher's Edition" - this contains all the major applications plus a bit more besides. The layout of the book is a walkthrough of all the major components of the Red Hat system; installing, configuring hardware, navigating in linux, using the internet, networking and system administration.

However in my opinion, this book falls down by being too laboured when describing various functions. Once you've found your feet in linux, you'll soon want to start tinkering but its difficult to find exactly the bit of information you want in this book without reading pages of prose to spot the vital tip your looking for.

All in all, a fair introduction to the world of Red Hat Linux but only if you have the patience to read it from cover to cover. Also consider the "Red Hat Linux 9 Bible" which provides both a good introduction and an indispendable reference.

I would just like to note that this book comes with Red Hat Linux 9 (Publishers Edition). I ordered this book along with the Red Hat Linux 9 CD from Amazon not realising this so I have now returned the CD's leaving me £4 out of pocket due to postage expenses.

I will be using Linux at university as part of my course and have found the book very usefull in teaching me how to use Linux. The book is split up into 24 short chapters starting with how to install Linux on your computer (very usefull). Each chapter builds on previous ones and contain a simple step by step guide for each of the tasks. The chapters end with a few questions to help consolidate your knowledge.

I am currently on chapter 5 of the book and so far I have noticed a few mistakes in the step by step guide and answers to the end of chapter questions. However if you read over the chapers again you should be fine, part of the learning I guess.

Cant rate at all 25 May 2004

I received the book and wanted to get to grips with redhat 9

I have little spare time but when i finally read the first chapter and spent time reformatting my drive to make a partition for linux, i loaded the disc and up came the redhat logo, you press enter and away we go, NOT! all it did was load lines and lines of text and then stopped, i tried 8 times then thought maybe i need to load the second disc at this point, it didnt say but nothing else worked so i go to the book and the second disc is in 3 bits, aarrhhh!! how lucky is that?

Anyone want to buy this book? had enough, wasted my valuable time and money, very angry

I tried to find a free download on line but it seems unless you have a spare arm and leg, you dont get a copy

This is my experience with this purchase anyway, it all looks good but you cant go much further without the disc's
