Product Description

Product Description

Sams Teach Yourself Apache in 24 Hours covers the installation, configuration, and ongoing administration of the Apache Web server, the most popular Internet Web server. It covers both the 1.3 and the new 2.0 versions of Apache.

Using a hands-on, task-oriented format, it concentrates on the most popular features and common quirks of the server.

The first part of the book helps the reader build, configure, and get started with Apache. After completing these chapters the reader will be able to start, stop, and monitor the Web server. He also will be able to serve both static content and dynamic content, customize the logs, and restrict access to certain parts of the Web server.

The second part of the book explains in detail the architecture of Apache and how to extend the server via third-party modules like PHP and Tomcat. It covers server performance and scalability, content management, and how to set up a secure server with SSL.

I had very limited knowledge of apache when I first started reading this book. Basically I was just using apache 2 to run a home network website with static pages, but this book has totally changed all that. It has been written for the complete novice but puts through advanced information into and easy to understand format. Although some sections do require a second reading to get the idea clearly understood, but that is through trying to cram so much information into a short amount of time, in personal use.

The chapters are well organised and well formatted from start to finish and precisely documented. You can easily tell that the author understands, and enjoys his subject and is an experienced teacher. He is able to give you the building blocks upon which to base the next chapter upon.

For example, the first two chapters are essential for understanding the basics of how, not only the apache server runs but how information is passed between browsers and the server itself.

It goes on to delve deep into information providing very good coverage of virtual hosting, using apache as a proxy server and numerous other interesting subjects with mod_perl, tom cat and documenting various GUIs for apache.

The only downside I have noted for this book, and its not really worth losing a star over, is the lack of documentation of windows on certain subjects which interested me, such as virtual hosting. I found it was more geared towards linux users (though they are the main users of apache) but it would be nice in the future to maybe help those in the windows enviroment a bit more.

All in all an excellent book and a book that will help through any problems with apach web server

Excellent for beginners and worthwhile to buy! 19 Oct 2003

Although the title of the book is Apache 2, and it contains full information about it, I learnt from it all the basic things you need to know related to web servers. Being a complete beginner, I learnt not just about Apache, but also about what are SSL, PHP, CGI's, Proxy servers and Tomcat through the book. Everything is explained in plain english and easy to understand. Each chapter has an introductory section that makes it much easier to understand. It's like having the author by your side guiding you.

Good beginner/intermediate book 28 Mar 2003

Format:Paperback
I picked up the book when moving to Red Hat 8, which includes Apache 2 by default. My knowledge of web administration is limited to Apache 1.3 and this book does a good job of explaining what has changed which is what I was looking for. The book covers everything you would expect from a beginner Apache book such as installation, configuration, logging and some others that I did not such as PHP, mod_perl and Tomcat. I only use PHP, so I cannot comment on the others. I liked the simple, no-nonsense approach of the author to the topics and you can also tell he knows his stuff.
The SSL chapter is the best one I have read on the topic.

Great web administration book 4 Jun 2003
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is an excellent book if you are interested in learning how to administer Apache based servers. It helped me get started with the Apache that came with my Red Hat Linux and to install it in my Windows laptop for testing. The book focuses on Apache 2 but it is fine for Apache 1.3, though if you run Apache on Windows it is recommended that you use Apache 2. I found the book more detailed and easier to read than the O'reilly one.
It covers installation of PHP but not how to program PHP.
