I just received this little book and is a stunner! It's so little, about 5 x 7 and has only 32 pages but considering the gorgeous color pics and the fact that every word is in both Welsh and English, it's jam-packed.
It's nice that the book gives equal time to English and Welsh text. My husband's family is in England and several relatives lived in Wales for a while. I really wish I knew how to pronounce the words ... by studying the parallel titles and paragraphs, you could teach yourself to be bilingual! I counted and all but 3 pages have color close-up photos of samplers and couple portraits. The cover includes a photo of an "eisteddfod" or prize-money purse which was handed out at church ("eisteddfodau") festivities. This one is from 1908 and is in red velvet with cross stitch sewn on.
I love samplers, have stitched several and own many books on the subject. This is now a highly prized addition to my library.
I was stunned when I searched Samperi Cymreig on Amazon and found another book of the same title; I bought it and they are a great pair:
Sampleri: Cymreig: Hanes, Technegau, Enghreifftiau (Welsh Edition)
The following 2 books which are listed as sources for this book:
Samplers (The Shire Book) (This is a good one)
Samplers from the Welsh Folk Museum collection
I love samplers as well as needlework history and combining other countries' works shows such an interesting side.
