This is a really useful 'teach yourself' book for beginners. (I don't think it would have a lot to offer the expert quiltmaker). It contains step by step instructions for a number of different patchwork blocks, arranged more or less in order of difficulty. The 'quilt as you go' method is used, much less daunting for people who haven't tackled large projects before.
Instructions are detailed, nicely illustrated, and don't assume any prior knowledge.
What's especially good are the illustrations of quilts made by learners on the author's quiltmaking course - they are ordinary people, and you can see how a quilt will REALLY look as opposed to how it might look when made by an expert.
And even though the quilts shown aren't perfect, they are all beautiful, which is very reassuring!

This lovely book contains fully illustrated instructions on how to make a sampler quilt using twenty quilt blocks, each of which uses a different patchwork technique.
It's an excellent guide for the beginner or for someone who has made a couple of quilts and wants to learn more about different techniques. The book includes both hand and machine pieced techniques and the gallery photos show pictures of quilts made from beginners in Lynne Edwards's classes. This is a feature I like because not only does it show what the quilts look like when made by relatively experienced workers, it shows that the quilt can be made by someone who is new to quiltmaking and also gives you some idea of how the blocks look in different colourways.
This is a book that is enjoyable to look at as well as to work from and can be recommended to anyone looking for a clear, comprehensive manual of quiltmaking techniques.

Great introduction to creating a sampler quilt, with instructions for a number of different blocks including more unusual ones like stained glass patchwork and Hawaiian applique. There's photos throughout of similar quilts made up in different colourways so you can see what different effects you can get from a different palette. At the back are a handful of other projects- quilts made up using just one design and an ultra-simple cushion.
As a keen patchworker, I found this quite inspiring. Even though I already have most of these patterns, nothing beats the visual impact of seeing them used in different ways and different colours!

I have always wanted a sampler quilt but as a beginner I often found instructions to be unclear, as if one should just know what to do. This book has clear and precise instructions and also some helpful little tips. The photographs are good too and the hints about choosing colours. I am now well on the way to having my (hopefully) lovely quilt. All in all a good book, I will probably by some more of her books in the future.

This book is ideal for a beginner, like me. The instructions are really clear and there is a good variety of different patchwork pieces to make. You can put them all together to make a big quilt. Or not. It even anticipates things you might do wrong before you've done them. It's got templates to trace over too. There's a partner book that follows on, called "New Sampler Quilt Book" by the same author, which is equally good.

This book was recommended to me by a friend and it is, as she said, an excellent aid to making a first quilt. The processes are well-described and the pictures of students' quilts colourful and lively - very motivating. Each square is completed 'as you go' and consequently gives a feeling of real and speedy progress. This book has become my 'quilting bible'.
