I am fond of walking on the Greek islands but the maps have always been a problem. Until now, the best maps were those of Road Editions and Anavasi. I have walked around the island in 14 days in the month of May of the year 2011, and I had first bought the Road Editions map but later I discovered another map for sale on the internet: the Terrain/Skai Map. The scale of the Road Editions and the Skai maps are the same: 1/50.000 which in fact is not detailed enough for walkers but there simply is nothing else at the moment of writing. The Skai Map is better than the Road Editions map. Less tracks and roads are missing on the Skai map than on the Road Editions map. But there are nice tracks and dirt roads missing on this Terrain/Skai Map as well. For instance in the Limnionas/Paleochori regfion (in the south western of the island). But the very scenic path between Drakei and Potami Beach is there, and some of the paths in the Ag. Konstantinos/Manolates/Vourliotes (best region for walkers, I find) are on the map as well. But not all of them. Some advice: what I always do is drawing the paths and tracks from the walking guides (Dieter Graf Editions, Rother Verlag, Sunflower Landscape) on the maps I have of the same island. Only then you have a better idea of the walking possibilities on the island. An advantage of the Road Editions Map is that you can add personal drawings/signs on it, since the Skai Map is of a kind of material on which you can only make temporary drawings (after a while, they will be gone). The distances are always indicated on the Skai Map, and that's good. It also has a map of the centre of Samos Town.
