well i think sam cooke was and still is one of the greatest singers of all time , so as i have been a fan of sams music for quite a few years i wanted to learn and find out more about the man his background his family life friends etc , and if you like me figured there must be a load of stuff about him on dvd , well wrong , for all my searching this dvd was all i could find . I know there are books available but i really wanted footage from the old shows and a good quality documentary to really fill me in on sams life , the dvd features many interviews with some of sams aquiantances and singers from the era , inc aretha franklin and lloyd price and interviews from his brothers and sister , and better still stories about sam and anecdotes which for me makes for a bigger picture of sams personality which perhaps you cannot get from just his music , also if like me you were not quite old enough to have been alive when sam was still performing this dvd will be very very informative , and very interesting . Now the real let down , not enough of the real footage of sam performing from the 50s and 60s from the actual t.v. shows , why they show you say 30 to 40 seconds of sam in a clip , then cut to an interview , i wanted to see the whole clip with sam completing the whole song , i can only imagine the restrictions on the budget for making the documentary made them keep the docu down to the minimum ,even with some of the interviews they have been cut short , but the complete interviews are avaialble seperately in the extras section of the dvd which is great and lets face it to try to cram sams talented life story into just over an hour and ten minutes is near impossible , but they did not do a bad job , pity they did not put all the old t.v. performances from the documentary in there entirety as extras as well , this would have been great , and made the dvd well worth the money alone. As for the poor quality of the original t.v. shows from the 50s and 60s what can you say ? given the choice of old poor quality t.v. footage of the great man or no footage at all , then i will take the poor footage everytime for what there is does give you a feel of the man and shows you more of his live performances off of t.v. that really shows sams appeal , and the talent you knew he had already , but the perfomances just show you he was a truly gifted singer of the highest order. If you want more info on sam and to see rare footage when he was at his peak , then like me take a chance , i found out that it was more than worth it and introduced me to rarer tracks from sams recording career , hope it does the same for you .
