Product Description

Soap Nuts are washing detergent that grows on trees - Used for Millennia, now rediscovered for the modern world. Soap nuts are mild and soft cleansing for your washing machine Ecological and economical compared to other brands of detergent. Two pounds of soapnuts can be used for more than 100 loads of laundry. In India and Nepal, the soapnut has been used as a vegetable washing detergent since time immemorial. The up to 15 metres high soap nut tree grows mainly in South India. The ripe soapnuts are harvested in October. When removed from the tree the soapnuts are sticky and golden in colour. They are dried and their colour becomes reddish-brown. Then the nuts are cracked and the black kernel, which can neither be eaten nor used for washing is removed and the shell, which contain saponine (a natural detergent), are packed up in cotton bags. How does it work? The sticky saponine in the shells of the soap nuts acts similar to normal soap. As soon as the shells get in contact with water, this natural saponine soap is released and creates mild suds. Place 4-5 half shells in one of the provided cotton bags. Tie the bag and place it with your laundry in the washing machine. Start your machine as usual, with or without pre-wash. The remains of the soapnuts can be composted or be disposed of through organic refuse. The nut can be easily used in your washing machine. Unlike common washing powders and liquids that contain considerable amounts of chemicals, the soapnut is environmental friendly and is gentle of the skin. Used for all fabrics and with all temperatures. Tips: No need for fabric softeners Works well with delicate fabrics such as silk and wool When washing in cold to warm water, soapnuts can be used for a second time the same day In the case of heavy stains, we recommend adding one tablespoon of stain remover. For a fragrant wash add your favourite essential oils

The spieces used is "SAPINDUS MUKROSSI" & the Origin is Uppar Himalayas, India.

Good natural value 30 July 2009
We were introduced to these by our Daughter in Law in the U.S.A. who uses them for most of her normal garment washing. During a recent visit I was doubtful at using them for my shirts but once tried I was surprised at the good result and the fresh smell. My wife is picky about her washing and sets a high standard but even she has no complaints so far. They don't do everything, so dont throw away the stain remover or the biological just yet. We also found that when dry fabric had a slightly rougher feel, but that may be because we have used fabric softener for so long and now don't. They are economic. In the U.S. A. the kernels are left in and you can get 4 or five washes out of one batch. Remember to remove them before putting the washing in the drier !

Soapnuts 2 Aug 2010
You need a couple of weeks to get used to washing using these, but I wouldn't go back.

Cons are: Stain removal is harder, you need to check laundry first (about 15 mins for whites) and pre-treat stains (soap and scrub or spot-treatment) and use soda -crystals (for colours) or Ecover laundry bleach (for whites) in wash.

Pros are : Clothes are much softer, no skin irritation, learn to love the unperfumed smell, no optical fresheners means colours brighter though whites not so bright, a bag lasts for months, can also use the liquid as surface cleaner and hand soap (runny but quickly get used to that - saves so much packaging.)

Making liquid - many recipes online - I boil 50g shells in 1 litre water for 20 mins, top water back up, and add lemon juice to preserve, essential oils if I want to perfume. Use 50 -100 mls in wash.

what can i say, not the best soap nuts ive ever used, but they do the job sufficiently! came with 2 little bags to pop them in, and at 1kg that's a lot of nuts, would possibly buy again, though i have had better ones in the past, maybe its just pot luck as to how soapy they are when you get them, but previously i had really sticky ones that had lots of soap when wet, and whilst these are neither sticky nor super soapy, with lots in the little bag they do the trick, gotta be better than using lots of nasty chemicals!

we also add a few drops of lavender essential oil to add some much needed fragrance!

if your new to soap nuts, dont expect a brilliant white clean like any of the big brands of powder/gel/capsule/etc.. claim, if your tried and tested in the world of soapnut they should do the trick!

Cheap Washing Product
These were cheap but I did not buy them for that reason. I've been trying to get away from the detergent-for-washing cycle that we all seem to have joined. Read more

excellent product. ideal for dark clothing as the soap nuts do not cause fading ,which some soap powders seem to.

What a versatile and (genuinely) natural cleaning product
I have had these for a couple of weeks now. Very quickly I decided that a few nuts in the little bag was not going to work for me - kept losing the bag in the washing. Read more

Soap Nuts
Very good value, a few nuts last for about 5 washes. A £10 bundle of soap nuts would probably provide at least a years worth of washing, in comparison to a commercial box of soap... Read more
