Product Description

Synopsis
The story starts with an account at the age of 17 of the 'Dara' tragedy. It then covers the ten years Captain Ian Tew spent with the Selco Salvage in Singapore and ranges from the UK coast to the South China Sea, from the Persian Gulf to the Southern Ocean, performing salvage in storm force winds to tropical calm. He becomes Chief officer on the newly acquired salvage tug Salvaliant and learns his salvage towing from the Dutch Captain. He goes on to command the first of Selco's super tugs the Salvanguard salving the Globa Mariner off the Eritrean coast during that war. He finally takes over one of the world's super tugs, and salves an oil rig loaded barge off Fowey. Finally as a roving salvage master he is involved with the ultimate salvage of the Al Ahood the first commercial salvage to take place in a war zone. She was hit by Iraqi fired exocets, set on fire and abandoned and it was said to be unsalvable, but Captain Tew proved them wrong.Captain Tew packed more adventure into ten years than many in a lifetime. He worked when decisions had to be made and thinking on your feet was the key to success.

5.0 out of 5 stars A excellent account of a career in salvage, 17 Feb 2008
Captain Ian Tew's personnal biography of a career in salvage, 1974-1984.

Written with considered clarity and depth, it brings together the characters, technical aspects, vessels and economics of salvage in an excellent account that keeps a most entertaining pace throughout.

Amply illustrated with the author's own photographs, maps and diagrams, it will give pleasure to both the armchair enthusiast and experienced salvor.

The term "No cure - no Pay" has found its best modern literary definition.

With kindest regards

B'Booker

NB. For an entertaining understanding of the salvage world under two generations, I would suggest that after you have enjoyed 'Salvage - a personal odyssey', you read 'The Grey Seas Under' by Farley Mowat (The Lyons Press reprint with ISBN 1585742406 / 9781585742400 is suggested), which gives a passionate account of the tug 'Franklin Foundation' (1930-1948), first published in 1958.

5.0 out of 5 stars An exhilirating read, 11 May 2008
By Gerard Lynch "paddingtonw2bear" (Belfast, Northern Ireland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As a confirmed landlubber but definite travel enthusiast, I was encouraged to read this book by a friend. Ian Tew is a lucid writer who can transport us to a storm-laden South China Sea, with a ship dangerously beached on coral and a rescue operation in train that could see his own ship dashed against the deadly coral.

The world of salvage was something I hadn't really appreciated existed before reading this book. The courage of the salvors and incredible dangers faced by them is simply mindblowing, rather reminiscent of the oil fire activities of Red Adair - think of going to work on a burning tanker under Iraqi exocet file...

My only criticism would be that for a lay person, there is some technical information which is neither necessary nor particularly comprehensible. Perhaps it is necessary for a nautical audience. In any case, there is no trouble in skipping over a few paragraphs to the next tale of derring-do under a tropic sun.
