Lizz Wright continues her genre-defying journey with Fellowship, a nod to her roots in gospel on the one hand and her gospel of eclecticism on the other. Beginning with the ecumenical Me’Shell N’Degeocello-penned title track, Fellowship is not a traditional genre exercise. While emphasizing a healthy dose of the rousing hymnody Wright grew up singing in the church (she is, indeed, ... Read more in Amazon's Lizz Wright Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Such a warm voice 30 May 2005
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Lizz Wright has a beautiful warm voice that really grabs you. I have seen her perform live and she is a really tremendous singer, a natural talent.
Perhaps some of the reviewers here have not listened to the entire album as for me the best songs are the 4 at the end, and paricularly Blue Rose which is just fantastic in all its simplicity.
In my opinion Lizz is at her best when she sings soul more so than in the jazzy genre. Perhaps that is why some of the die-hard jazz fans are less enthusiastic.
Listening to some of the extracts from her new album I have the impression that is also the direction she has chosen to take. I am anxiously awaiting its release.
In the mean time I can recommend Salt to anyone that likes soulful vocal music. The perfect background for a fine glass of wine and a good book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A mellow female voice 21 July 2003
Format:Audio CD
A mellow female voice
Reviewer: Rob Sharpe from TRURO, CORNWALL United Kingdom
I managed to listen to a couple of tracks on a radio station and was immediately hooked. I just couldn't wait until the album was released in July 2003 so I pre-ordered it on Amazon. My expectations were surpassed having now listened to the album in its entirety. In days of old, we used to say that by listening to the tracks of an LP, one would 'wear-out the grooves' if you listened to certain tracks too often. I reckon that a modern-day euphemism would be more akin to 'the more that I listen to the album, then the greater the likelihood of wearing out the laser on my cd-player'. The album might certainly have this influence on my cd player! Lizz Wright is a wonderful talent with a mellow voice. The Title track of 'Salt', I believe, sets the foundation for some much stronger performances........especially "End of the line" and the rather catchy, "Lead the way". If you really want to hear someone who can compete with the likes of Diana Krall, Dianne Reeves, et al, then just try listening to Lizz Wright singing the truly moving "Blue Rose". Need I say more!.........Enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars A joy 18 Mar 2004
Format:Audio CD
Lizz Wright is the quintessential modern jazz vocalist. To classify her as a cross between one musician and another fails to indicate that she is a powerful vocalist in her own right. Sure, she would have drawn on the spirit of those that have come before her. Lizz, like practically most vocalist is a child of the church and its shows in her singing. The presence of Tommy Li Puma and Brian Blade as producers on this album gives her beautifully sounded voice an added dimension. A host of varying musicians are called on and the complete expanse of Lizz Wright’s vocal range is laid bare. This is an enjoyable album, but suffers from the fact that it has not been published enough. Most people who but this album will find it well rounded and an album they can return to time and time again as it retains its freshness. A joy!!

I haven't heard a heartfelt beauty of an album like this in such a long time. This is beauty and so is she, inside and out. It took me several weeks to break down and purchase this as I saw her beautiful face lit up in a big display at a music store. I really didn't know what to expect but was so glad I took the chance to buy this artist!!! I haven't been this pleased in at least five years when I did the same by picking up a copy of Dakota Moon.
This is truly what radio and record labels need to be promoting. From the first note it was love at first sound. If you've not heard her, don't even think about it, JUST BUY IT!!!
She's a cross between Oleta Adams and India.Arie but with her own style. Lizz, if you read this, thank you for being such a beautiful sound from the throne room of God himself. You move me so much I have to force myself to take out the cd and play something else. You are SALT!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Stands the test of time 14 Sep 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I used to have a copy of this that walked somewhere over the years. Lizz Wright's rich voice spoke to me from when I first heard this and I have enjoyed every CD she has put out since. But getting this CD for a second time has proven that in many ways this is the best--the first sighting of a complete talent, borne of years in church choirs and solo spots. THere is a tasteful and substantial range of flavours to the material here, not just salt, and what I did not realize at first listening, although I rated the musicians and arrangements, was that the band was rammed with jazz stars in the making including Brian Blade, Chris Potter, Adam Rogers etc. Do check this out and her other CDs. It would be great if she could tour the UK again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely smooth singing 23 Dec 2003
Format:Audio CD
I thoroughly enjoyed this album. It is a combination of Lalah Hathaway and Sarah Vaughan. Very smooth, very atmospheric, perfect for reflecting after a hard day. From a jazz musicians point of view her musical structure on many songs, particularly Walk With Me, is very interesting and worthy of study. Much of the other tracks are just flat out nice to listen to; cool and smoth. The lyrics are positive and uplifting, unlike so much stuff out these days. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb 28 Dec 2005
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
If anyone is looking at this album wondering if they should buy it, I cannot recommend it highly enough. The title track "Salt" is of course one of the best tracks, but there are so many others - "Soon as I get home" brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it, "Afro Blue" is just sublime. If you want to listen to a beautiful, strong, yet gentle voice this is the album. You will not regret this purchase - I promise you. Spread the word to all your friends.
