Product Description

Manufacturer's Description
THE RIO® SALON LASER SCANNING HAIR REMOVER™
Features diagramYou can now enjoy the benefits of permanent hair reduction without paying for expensive salon treatments. Home laser hair removal is suitable for most areas including facial hair, underarms, arms, legs and bikini line.

Functions diagram

The Rio® SALON LASER SCANNING HAIR REMOVER™ works by sending a laser beam to the hair follicle with enough energy to destroy the root, without it affecting the surrounding area. This process is known as photothermolysis. Unlike home use IPL (Intense Pulse Light) the results of laser treatments are permanent.

LASER HAIR REMOVAL OR IPL?
Home use IPL (Intense Pulse Light) recommends continued, on going treatment of the area every two weeks to prevent hair regrowth. This is because IPL doesn't destroy the hair root, so regrowth will occur if the treatment is not repeated every two weeks. Laser Hair Removal technology actually destroys the hair root giving permanent hair reduction.

Salon Laser headLASER HAIR REMOVAL EXPLAINED
Lasers deliver an intense beam of light which are made up of a single wavelength or colour. Skin is essentially transparent to light with a wavelength of 808 (nano meters), while melanin containing structures will absorb laser energy of this wavelength. It is therefore possible to target the hair follicle that has a concentration of melanin without affecting the surrounding area.

The light energy absorbed by the melanin pigment results in the rapid heating up of the hair follicle. This heat destroys the cells (papilla) responsible for hair growth. If adequate heating is achieved, then the follicle is permanently disabled resulting in a permanent reduction in hair growth. Note: This is different from home IPL (Intense Pulse Light) which requires continued treatments every two weeks to prevent hair regrowth.

SUITABLE SKIN TYPES
Melanin in the epidermis also absorbs the energy and limits the depth of penetration of the laser light into the skin. Using a light wavelength of 808nm enables treatment of relatively dark skin as well as fair-skinned types. However, laser hair treatment is not suitable for Afro Caribbean or black skin complexions. Laser treatment is also ineffective in removal of white or grey hair. Electrolysis should be considered as an alternative treatment.

HOW TO USE
Obviously read and understand the Information Guide provided before you get started and watch the step-by-step DVD for great tips and techniques. For best results we recommended that you use the SCAN mode on hairs that have been trimmed to 1mm-2mm in length.

24 hours before treatment it is very important to do a patch test. The patch test will confirm the maximum power level for your skin type. Each area to be treated must be checked as skin colour can vary.

By using the +/- buttons to select the correct power level for your skin type you're ready to go. Press the SCAN button once and place the wand on your skin then press and hold the button on the wand to zap the hairs. After that you can move onto the next area of hairs to be treated until you are done.

Treated hairs don't always fall out immediately as they are shed over time as they are released from the hair follicle so be patient. Laser hair removal is generally considered to be effective after 6 treatments over a 6-month period. IPL (Intense Pulse Light) home approved products generally require ongoing treatments every two weeks to prevent hair regrowth.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT LASER HAIR REDUCTION

How do I choose between Laser technology and IPL (Intense Pulse Light)?
With IPL in the home the hair root is not destroyed and as such you are required to retreat each area every two weeks to prevent hair regrowth. With Laser technology the hair root is destroyed giving permanent hair reduction.

How should I prepare my skin and hairs for laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal does not require any special skin preparations. Laser hair removal is most effective on pale skin so we recommend avoiding sunbathing, sun beds and fake tanning if possible The best results are on hairs which are only 1-3 mm long, we recommend trimming the hairs before treatment. Alternatively, you can shave before treatment as long as the hair is still visible at the root.

Salon Laser example of use - underarmsHow will my skin appear after the treatment?
Generally no perceptible changes will be apparent. A slight redness after treatment may occur but will normally fade over 24 hours. Any localised redness after treatment is caused by the destruction of the hair follicles and is quite normal.

What areas can I treat?
Most body hair can be removed using Laser Hair Removal - the most common areas are the face, underarms, legs, chest, back and bikini line. We do NOT recommend using laser hair removal on eyebrows.

How often can I repeat the treatment?
As long as the hair follicle or surrounding skin is not red, sore or inflamed, treatment can be repeated after 24 hours. Most people wait 3-4 weeks between treatments to see which hairs have been shed and to identify new re-growth.

Salon Laser example of use - bikini lineHow many treatments will I need?
Laser hair removal is generally considered to be effective after 6 treatments over a 6 month period. This varies from person to person and the area being treated, hair density, hair growth cycle and colour. Dark hair on fair skin responds best, but both dark and fair hair may take several treatments for long-term results. Some individuals may require more, and some fewer treatments, to achieve satisfaction. Initially you will notice a gradual reduction of the number of hairs. Women who suffer excessive hair growth due to male type hormones are likely to require long term maintenance.

Can I use other hair removal methods between treatments?
Laser hair removal needs a hair to be present in the follicle, hair removal methods which pluck the hair, such as waxing, epilators and tweezing are NOT suitable for use between treatments. Bleaching hairs is also NOT suitable as it removes the pigment and renders the laser ineffective. Shaving, micro-dermabrasion discs and cream depilatories are ideal for use between treatments.

Salon Laser example of use - faceIs there any aftercare routine I should follow?
Sun exposure or deep tanning should be avoided for at least a week. If the skin is exposed use a sunscreen. Also avoid using abrasive cleansers or skin peeling treatments. Avoid swimming in chlorinated water or using a hot tub for 48 hours.

SCIENTIFIC STUDIES ON LASER HAIR REMOVAL

Jinnah Medical College, Lahore, Pakistan. Laser Hair Removal with an 800 nm Diode Laser.

STUDY A retrospective study of 1000 women with Fitzpatric Skin Types II and VI.
CONCLUSION For the 500 women treated on their entire face and neck, apparent hair reduction was estimated to be in the 70% to 80% after five to six treatments. In other areas hair reduction was higher ranging from 80% to 95% with the women achieving satisfactory results within four or five treatments.

Harvard Medical School / Laser Center of New York. Effective, Permanent Hair Reduction Using a Pulsed, Diode Laser.

STUDY 92 patients treated at two separate facilities, comprising 45 males and 47 females with varying hair colours and skin types. Treatments were made at 0, 1, 3, 6 and 9 months.

Salon Laser DVDCONCLUSION 89% of patients achieved significant permanent hair reduction in this large, long-term, blind, controlled and quantitative study. Many patients had nearly complete, permanent hair reduction after two treatments. Re-growing hair was typically thinner and lighter in colour, adding to the cosmetic benefit.

Harvard Medical School. Study of Diode Laser for Hair Reduction on all Skin Types.

STUDY Forty subjects, 25 female and 15 males with coarse, dark hair on their thigh and backs were treated.

CONCLUSION An 800 nm diode laser provides for effective, long-term hair reduction of medium to coarse pigmented hair, even in some darker-skinned patients. Both short-term hair growth delay and permanent hair reduction was observed. In addition, when hair re-growth did occur, the hair was thinner and lighter.

Japanese Society of Aesthetic Surgery 1999. Lecture presented.

STUDY Reported on a multicenter clinical trial study involving 150 patients. The study involved six treatments given 1 - 2 months apart with patients being followed for at least six months after the last treatment.

CONCLUSION 93% of females and 80% of males had significant permanent hair reduction.Class one laser product

5.0 out of 5 stars Works but requires a little dedication, 9 Dec 2007
Having tried this machine and laser hair removal in a salon I can vouch for the fact that it feels the same and works in the same way. This really is a salon style laser hair remover for the home. But obviously it treats only 20 or so hairs at a time unlike the big salon machines. But I guess the fact that salon machines costs thousands explains this.

So it requires a little patience and like the salon machines you need to treat the same area a few times to get the hairs in the right growth stage. To be fair the instructions are excellent and do explain that laser hair removal isn't a miracle cure.

To conclude..yes... the Rio Scanning laser is excellent and feels just like the salon machines... but don't expect instant miracles. I think this is maybe why the reviews are a bit mixed. Personally I think it's a bargain compared to the salon prices.

1.0 out of 5 stars A technology/science fact to consider very seriously before purchasing a Rio Laser Hair Remover..., 27 Nov 2008
By S. Warwick (UK) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
I have been reading all the reviews (both good and bad) on this product to try and decide whether or not to purchase a Rio laser for myself.

In one of the customer discussions boards I noticed that someone mentions a home laser hair remover named a `Tria Home Laser Hair Removal Unit', that apparently works brilliantly - although costly at approx £700. I decided to do some research on the Internet to compare both of these products. It appears that the Tria laser light is emitted in short pulses at a rate of 40watts, which is the highest intensity allowed to be sold for personal home use - (So no doubt hair removal lasers used by the medical profession are of far greater intensity than 40watts).

I then did some research on the Rio Laser, and found out that it only emits laser light in pulse rates of 0.5watts.

You do not need to be a mathematician to realise why so many people have given the Rio laser such bad reviews. It appears that the old adage you get what you pay for obviously rings true in this case.

0.5watts is so low that if you have been lucky enough to find it works for you then you must fall into a very small percentage of people whose hair is of exactly the correct type and at exactly the correct growing stage required.

For most mere mortals purchasing a laser of only 0.5watts will do nothing other than boost the share prices for Rio. Rio will no doubt realise that 0.5watts is scientifically useless in the purpose of hair removal, but will continue to give false hope to us poor members of the public that will do anything to rid ourselves of unwanted hair problems.

I am now going to go away and recalculate my finances in order to consider whether spending the extra money will be worth gaining an extra 35.5watts to rid me of my problem... Sounds a lot, but compared to clinic prices, which I hasten to add I paid for well over a year, and spent far more than this in the process, it might just be money well spent.

Even using a reputable clinic attached to an NHS hospital (as I did), hair does eventually grow back. By no means is laser technology a permanent solution, or a quick fix. Treatment usually takes at least between 6 and 12 months -(having treatment once every 6 weeks). You have to keep treatment topped up once you have achieved the desired affect, even if it's just 2 or 3 times a year to be rid of the problem for good.

So perhaps the £700 for the Tria laser might be worth an investment for a long-term hair free measure, rather than paying clinic prices...

Good luck in your quest everyone!! :-)

    1.0 out of 5 stars Didn't work for me, 6 May 2008
By Margie (Glasgow) - See all my reviews
I have been using this for four months with absolutely no effect. I have tried to be patient and persevere but it is fiddly to use - the laser head is such a small part of the wand that it is difficult to know if you have positioned it where you want it to be. I have very fair skin and dark hair so this should work well for me but having seen no improvement my patience has run out.
