Italy released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), Italian ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), Italian ( Dolby Digital 5.1 ), Italian ( Subtitles ), SPECIAL FEATURES: Interactive Menu, Remastered, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: Late on Guy Fawkes Day, 1892, Oscar Wilde arrives at a high-class brothel where a surprise awaits: a staging of his play 'Salome,' with parts played by prostitutes, Wilde's host, his lover Bosey, and Lady Alice. The movie moves between the play and Wilde's night. In the play, Herod begs his pubescent step-daughter Salome to dance for him, promising her anything she desires. Her mother, Herodias, objects. Salome is stung by John the Baptist's rejection of her affections. The prophet's scolding celibacy puts him between the expressed desire of age and youth. Wilde dallies with a young man as he watches the show, provoking Bosey's jealousy. Two surprises await us. ...Salome's Last Dance

Salome a la Russell 2 Oct 2006
By NB
Format:DVD
If you like Russell, you'll love this. Using the expedient of a performance in a brothel, Russell gives us an excellent interpretation of Wilde's play as watched by a fictional Wilde (Grace). This gives him rein to include the usual bizarre oddities we expect from this off-the-ball director; still, he keeps a firm hand on things for once and the result is tight, well-acted and intriguing.

The premise is that Wilde (and friends) visit a brothel, where the staff put on his play of "Salome". That's the main body of this Russell film. The actress playing Salome herself (forgive me, I can't remember) plays it up to the hilt. Stratford Johns plays Herod, Glenda Jackson his wife.

The play-within-the-play is excellent, and makes you wish that Russell would turn to some more works of Wilde - it needs his style to capture the delicacy of some of the moments.

Highly recommended, in short. Don't be put off by the R18 - probably just from the Russellian portrayl of the Israelites. It's totally in keeping with Wilde and the show.

The name of the actress who plays Salome as mentioned in the other review is Imogen Millais-Scott and she plays her character beautifully - with sparkle, cheek and plenty of sauce. If you haven't seen it watch it now (although you may have some problems getting hold of it). It's a rare gem.
