5.0 out of 5 stars Twisted, talented and amazing, 15 Feb 2004
By christopher j guerin (leicester, leicestershire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Salome [1992] [DVD] (DVD)
It doesn't get any better than this. This co-production of the ROH and the LA opera is a classic but timely recounting of the Wilde-Strauss masterpiece. Maria Ewing is amazing as Salome. She gives the character a realistic and frightening interpretation which is vocally and visually stunning. This is a woman you wouldn't want to meet on the street or have move in next door. With apologies to "Basic Instinct" you'd hope that it was only bunnies she was boiling. Speaking of frightening, there are also not many opera singers you'd want to see in the nude: Ms. Ewing is certainly an exception. The dance of the seven veils, for once, makes you see what Herod was all worked up about. The supporting cast is equally wonderful with Michael Devlin singing an intense and compelling Jokhann and Kenneth Rigel a delicously depraved Herod. Sir Edward Downes conducts a splendidly intense Royal Opera House orchestra and the production directed by Sir Peter Hall simply sizzles. Opera at its best is better than the latest Hollywood blockbuster; this is opera at its best

5.0 out of 5 stars Ewing's Salome, 24 Mar 2009

This is the best Salome I know. The singing and playing are superb, and Ewing, better than any other, brings out the self obsession and madness of Salome. Her ending the Dance of the Seven Veils starkers is a bonus.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning production with an excellent cast, 12 Dec 2007
By 221b (Kent, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Salome [1992] [DVD] (DVD)
This is a wonderful recording that captures the shamefully short-lived Peter Hall production at Covent Garden, featuring his then-wife Maria Ewing in the title role. This is Covent Garden at its best - the production is sumptuously and stylishly designed, steeped in great decadence - the colours zing out from the screen in excellent lighting and camera work. The supporting cast are all fabulous, Kenneth Riegel giving a particularly vivid Herod, Michael Devlin is a powerful but dignified Jokanaan. The orchestra has an air of improvised energy skillfully guided by Edward Downes. But as with any production of Salome, the central role is the key to its success. Here Maria Ewing brings a disturbing edge to the Princess, absolutely obsessed with the Baptist - you can understand why Herod orders her to be killed! She is somewhat wayward with the vocal line, but never errs from the spirit of the piece - a crowning achievement and probably her most successful role!
The clarity of the recording is excellent too, and although it was recorded in 1992 stands up incredibly well to advances in technology - crystal clear and in perfect sound.
Higly recommended - along with Malfitano's account of the title role as a joint benchmark DVD recording!

A stunning performance all round which defines the term "decadent". I first came to this opera through Sir Georg Solti's recording and I still find Birgit Nilsson and Gerhard... Read more
