Product Description
In 1939 at the age of four Sally finds herself in the wrong carriage on a train of evacuees, and ends up in a little village in Essex called Chrishall. Although living under the shadow of the war, Sally enjoys a special childhood with Fred and Jessie who treat her like their own daughter. Churchill’s victory speech was the first true disaster in Sally’s life. It meant she had to leave her little paradise and return to a world she had not known for six years. But she promised that one day she would tell the World about her wartime friends.
Her life in Holland far away from her beloved village was a successful, miraculous adventure. Then a tragic accident guides her to death’s door, but to this day Sally will tell you “my darling friends from the war kept the doors of heaven closed”. They wanted to make sure she would keep her promise.
Sally Bone encapsulates the foibles of human nature and the ups and downs of life that we all experience. What makes it a particular joy to read are the pointed descriptions of all the characters – good and bad – that Sally meets.

About the Author
The author, Sheila Fields, combines scenes from her own life with her imagination. Born in London, she has lived near Amsterdam for many years now, but her books breathe that authentic English atmosphere that England itself has almost forgotten.
