Review

This new edition is a well researched, lively and engaging biography. --Defence Focus Magazine

Product Description

The extraordinary character and career of Saladin are the keys to understanding the Battle of Hattin, the fall of Jerusalem and the failure of the Third Crusade. He united warring Muslim lands, reconquered the bulk of Crusader states and faced the Richard the Lion Heart, king of England, in one of the most famous confrontations in medieval warfare. Geoffrey Hindley's sympathetic and highly readable study of the life and times of this remarkable, many-sided man, who dominated the Middle East in his day, gives a fascinating insight into his achievements and into the Muslim world of his contemporaries.

I'm pretty sure that a lot of people like me became interested in Saladin after watching Kingdom of Heaven. While there are quite a few books out there that are written about him, I chose this one because it had the most pages!

However, I am absolutely glad that I purchased this book. Like any good book that is a biography, the elements should not only consist of what the candidate had done in their life but, more importantly, how the situation at their time puts into context the significance of their achievements.

You'll appreciate how Saladin was 'destined' to achieve what he had, by reading about his genealogy and how the events of his family helped direct Saladins' life. The book then goes into great detail about Saladins' political life, and when coming towards the end of his life, how he was truly loved by everyone - friends as well as his enemies.

The author uses simple language that never compromises on detail: this is the definitive book on Saladin, the Hero of Islam.

Saladin was without a doubt a most extraordinary man and a key character in the Muslim world in the late 1100's. So famous was he for his actions then, that now, several hundred years later, his achievement are legendary and he is still revered by thousands the world over!

This excellent and very readable volume written by a specialist in this period of world history cleverly provides the reader with a fascinating insight into the life and times of this most remarkable man and describes how, as a brilliant soldier and battlefield commander, he rose to power in an area that included Egytpt, Palestine and Syria.

The name Saladin often brings shivers down ones spine, however as this book proves, he was a chivalrous leader who also enjoyed a unequalled political skills and an enviable reputation for mercy after his conquests.

This well written volume includes some excellent black and white photographs and copies of period drawing, maps and paintings. There is a valuable notes section, a glossary of Arabic terms and a detailed bibliography, making it a valuable addition to any ancient history enthusiasts library.

most biographies are bought for reference rather than read for pleasure. This one fits into the second category as well as the first.
Highly readable, well researched, an exceptionally good overview of the life and indeed the times of one of the greatest leaders of Islam, one known and admired in the West as much as in his own land.
Highly recommended.
