I decided to buy a new mouse and the Saitek Eclipse Aluminium Touch Mouse caught my eye as it looked totally unique compared to most of the other mice on the market. Not cheap but affordable.
What was not stated at the time of purchase is that the mouse doesn't come with a bluetooth receiver, so unless your pc is bluetooth enabled you'll need to get a dongle in order for it to work.
The mouse installed easily and with the help of the hastily purchased dongle, was soon up and running.
The Touch Mouse is very light and responsive - although there's a lot more plastic than aluminium in the makeup of the product, which isn't apparent in the pictures.
Although the mouse looks like it has part of it missing, it is very comfortable to use and doesn't cause any wrist pain even after long periods of use.
There are a couple of niggles with this mouse. Firstly, the mini touchpad, which is almost flush with the left and right click buttons, so you have to look to see where your finger is sometimes as you don't have the raised profile you get with a normal scrolling wheel.
I don't have the most delicate of fingers and I'm perhaps not used to touchpads but this one does seem to have a mind of it's own sometimes. You can scroll up and down the page with the slightest touch and just click on the touchpad to navigate web pages.... BUT.....every now and then, it will go into overdrive and scroll up or down at high speed through the current page. This is particularly irritating if you are in your Outlook Express Inbox, containing several hundred emails and you find youself at the top (or the bottom) of the list in seconds!
The other issue I found with this mouse is, if you don't use it for a while it goes to sleep and doesn't want to wake up! Most mice and pc's will go into power saving mode if not used for a while and simply require a click or a nudge to get them working again. This one - no. If you right or left click, give it a nudge - nothing! I've had to move it vigourously from side to side for up to 30 seconds to wake it and on some occasions had to remove and replace the bluetooth dongle from my pc to get the mouse to recognise it again.
Having said all this, I've stuck with it and rather got to like it!
In summary:
Pros: Lightweight, responsive, easy to use.
Cons: No bluetooth receiver, touchpad very sensitive, goes to sleep if you ignore it for a while.
