All Saints Eve represents a collection of Victorian writing at it's best. Amelia B Edward's descriptive prose and satisifying plots are still fresh and combine the genres of travel writing and detective/ghost story seamlessly. One always feels the sense of place and the demise of the characters in the story are in harmony, wether a village on the Rhine, a Worcestershire pottery, or, that old victorian stalwart, the railway carriage. Edward's often contributed to Dicken's periodicals and her writing often rivals his in quality. Nineteenth century story writing dosn't come much better.
