I bought this disc after hearing a friend's cd version and it became another version of the third to add to the favourite list, which also includes Maazel which is probably the best engineered I've found so far, Levine, Ormandy, Barenboim. It is an exciting well recorded analogue version.
However, my primary reason for buying this disc is that it contains my favourite version of the composer's second piano concerto by Cecile Ousset partnered by the CBSO and Rattle. This performance is both suitably poetic and full of audacious imaginative wit in which soloist, conductor and orchestra all equally share in the achievement: sounds like they are having a ball! There is a scintillating joie de vivre about this performance that I've simply not experienced in other performances on my shelves: Thibaudet, Hough, Roge, Collard included. If I've had hard day in the office then this performance is the best thing I know to unwind and put a smile on my face!
There are older welcome encores too. Menuhin in the Havanaise with Philharmonia under Sir Eugene Goossens and Pretre conducting the Paris Opera Orchestra in the celebrated bacchanale .
