Product Description

Classic FM Magazine

"Blossoming virtuosity and sensitive musicianship .. . .ravishingly sensuous . . evocative and full of technical brilliance."

Album Description

This wonderful new album from the rising star of the cello world is both a showcase for Jamie Walton's extraordinary talent and, at the same time, a demonstration of the breadth and beauty of Saint-Saens' writing for this instrument.

Jamie Walton has, once again, excelled in playing and the Philharmonia too are brilliant. The music itself is beautiful and worth every penny of the cost of the disc. I would definitely recommend this recording; more for the cello concertos than the chamber work though. This of course is personal preference. Jamie Walton's Elgar and Myakovsky, again with the same orchestra, is another triumph.

The second Saints-Saens cello concerto is rarely performed, chiefly because of its phenomenal technical difficulties. However, these pose no problems for the brilliant young British cellist Jamie Walton. The sheer excitement of the solo playing is matched by the shimmering sound of the Philharmonia Orchestra under Alexander Briger. Equally thrilling is the better-known first cello concerto. With the sonata for cello and piano (Daniel Grimwood) slightly uncomfortably sandwiched (for chronological reasons) between the two concertos, you have the whole of Saint-Saens' cello works on one glorious disc. Very highly recommended.
