If you haven't heard the Saint-Saens 3rd violin concerto, just listen to this disc. I first heard this piece on a vinyl recording of Milstein's, played with silvery panache and great beauty. I have also heard Francescatti's and Joshua Bell's recordings. What a great pity I haven't heard Kyung Wha Chung playing this live. Her commitment and passion are exceptional, her musicianship beyond criticism. The opening is intense. At the end of the second movement, the violin and clarinet double up several octaves apart, in luminous arpeggios almost otherworldly in their beauty.
The Chausson Poeme is absolutely lovely, real poetry and passion, my favourite version on disc surpassing Perlman's versions and even Milstein.
If you buy this disc, consider also acquiring the legendary disc with Chung / Lupu playing the Franck & Debussy Sonatas coupled with the Ravel Introduction and Allegro (not the Chausson coupling which is redundant) - simply the finest music making around and a real bargain.
