Book Description

12 Sep 2000 Battleground Europe
After the First World War, how many thousands of British families would have proud or bitter reason to remember the name St Quentin? At least eight Divisions, 23 Brigades, 74 Battalions an enormous number of fighting men, a weight of experience, courage, defeat and victory, all to be traced through these fields and villages round the city. There is much to honour here: exhausted British troops marching south in the Retreat from Mons in August 1914, resistance attacks on the Hindenburg Line in 1917, desperate feats of arms in the final German onslaught in the Spring of 1918. Many impressive individual and collective achievements, captured guns, Victoria Crosses richly earned. The ancient city itself suffered too - bombardment by French and British artillery, its citizens subjected and exploited by the occupying German forces, then evacuated ahead of the withdrawal to the Hindenburg Line - before its final liberation in October 1918. The book gives details of positions, redoubts, attacks, lines of advance and retreat, with many illustrations provided from local sources. Most of the positions described can still be traced and the sites of some epic events located.

5.0 out of 5 stars A neglected facet of World War One Hindenburg Line history. 4 Oct 2012

St. Quentin Hindenburg Line is a Battleground Europe guidebook pertaining to the city of St. Quentin, France. The authors, Philip Guest and Helen McPhail, have led tours of the city and it's environs and have put together a valuable, and fascinating history of a neglected area of the Western Front. The area, sadly, does not draw many tourists as the big draw continues to be the battlefields of the Somme. A major battle was not fought at St. Quentin. It was somewhat prominent in the early actions of 1914, briefly in 1917, and again in the actions of 1918, in between it was occupied by the Germans. Like other guides in the series, black and white photos and fabulous maps are plentiful. Recommended tours round out the volume. I enjoyed this book because it is different from the other "battlefields". You see more of the French civilians and how events impacted their lives. I also recommend these volumes from the Battleground Europe series: The Hindenburg Line (Battleground Europe Series) and I have a particular interest in the Battle of Cambrai and highly recommend these volumes: Cambrai: Hindenburg Line (Battleground Europe. Hindenburg Line) Bourlon Wood: Hindenburg Line (Battleground Europe) and Flesquieres Hindenburg Line (Battleground Europe). See my reviews of these great books for more details!
