Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Saint Low is the flag under which former Madder Rose vocalist Mary Lorson is waging her solo career. Her break with the band, on the evidence of this self-titled debut, is not intended to be the harbinger of any bold new musical direction. Were any Madder Rose fan presented with Saint Low and told it was a new Madder Rose album, they might conclude that Madder Rose were mellowing somewhat in their dotage, but other than that, business as usual. This, of course, is no problem at all: Madder Rose spent their career being outrageously under-rated, and the few songs Lorson contributed were among their most overlooked aspects. Given the time and space to allow her under-utilised song-writing voice to match her impeccable singing voice (as ever, kind of a cross between Kristin Hersh and Sandy Denny), she's blooming: "Crash" and "Tall Trees" especially are gorgeous, elegaic ballads, and it's to be hoped that Saint Low have all the luck Madder Rose didn't. --Andrew Mueller

The best from 2000 5 Feb 2001

Format:Audio CD
Another of the best albums from last year. A mellow tribute from an artist of such variety and feelings that I could just go on and on listening.

A great solo album 27 July 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Mary Lorson, who wrote and performed the songs on this album has been releasing great records for over a decade with the group Madder Rose. The tragedy of Madder Rose's story has been that the last two albums they released 'Tragic Magic' and 'Hey June Fool' have been they're most complete and satisfying work to date.

This album has a little less variety than either of the albums I mention above, but is nicely focused and neatly wrought. Some of the songs such as 'Crash' and 'After the fall' are truly outstanding, but from time to time the lack of variety can make the songs blend in to one another.

I'd recommend this CD wholeheartedly and if you like slow and thoughtful songs (with mournful cello lines), then you'll probably go for this.

Good debut 4 Aug 2008
By Martyn VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Saint Low's first album contains bewitching material and good playing and production, which is what you'd expect if you're familiar with Mary Lorson's wry and soulful vocals and Billy Cote's musicianship. Though occasionally the material doesn't have the quality of the follow-up 'Tricks for Dawn' it's definitely worth a listen if you already have that album.
