Product Description

The life of St Francis is copiously recorded in several near-contemporary biographies. From these is drawn an account of his astonishly influential life as a devoted follower of Jesus. There are also several stories about him and a handful of of his writings which deserve special showcasing. This book interweaves the elements to create a book that can be enjoyed as a whole or tackled in shorter episodes. The result is inspiring and heartwarming.

Excellent Intro to an honorable man 1 Feb 2012
By Batfan7 - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
An excellent book to introduce children to the life of a godly man who's life of extremes held more excitement than anyone unfamiliar with it would ever expect. This book spent very little time on St. Francis' quiet life of contemplation, but did a phenominal job of showing how he moved from a man focused on wealth and war to one moved by God to seek peace and harmony. His joy in the end practically sparkled off the pages.

The illustrations were crisp and well done too. It's a beautiful book.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in giving their kids (or themselves!) a real life example of a person whose life was radically changed by knowing God.

Review: Saint Francis of Assisi 13 April 2008
By BOOKHEN2 - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I recall making a comment recently in conversation to someone who isn't Christian, it went something like this. "You look out at the world and see objects. When I look out my window I marvel at all that God has created." Here is the essence of St. Francis love for all that exists in the world, coming from God, a God of love who as creator made all that our earth holds.

St. Francis joyfully denied all that was his and would be his in the future out of love for God. He lived a poor life, owning nothing, and desiring to give the little that he did have to others. It is the life of the rich man in Scripture who could not divorce himself from all that he owned in reverse. Then after giving all up but life, what joy Francis experienced! What freedom to do the Lord's work was his!

Saint Francis of Assisi was written by Joyce Denham and illustrated by Elena Temporin. It is published by Paraclete Press in Massachusetts. You will find simple, almost childlike illustrations that will spark children and adult imaginations alike. I found particularly beautiful the last pages that showed red poppies grown in the grass.

With clear, easily understood text, the story is laid out in short units that each contain a title as with chapters--but they're not chapters. I recommend taking the time to read this to children so that they can imagine St. Francis' life while looking at Temporin's excellent illustrations. It may get a bit long for young children to sit through in one session, but because of the way the story is presented, you can read a portion and then return later. Or, it may be a good bedtime book--reading one unit each night until finished.

This edition of Saint Francis of Assisi would make an excellent gift for special occasions such as birthdays and church holidays. I recommend it as a gift on the event of a first communion. Although no longer a child, I enjoyed the book too!
