The Sainsmart LCD Keypad shield was an excellent purchase. It works very well with the Arduino Uno (V3). Once the Code was uploaded to the Arduino Uno the display worked very well.

The Lcd shield does not come with any code or instructions so I wrote my own but after doing a search on the internet I found many websites that offer similar code.

The fact that this display has the added keyboard function it give's it the edge over standard 16x2 LCD displays.

SainSmart LCD Keypad Shield arrived with broken connection between LED backlight and board (poor solder joint). I needed the item quickly and did not have time to return it and wait for a replacement, so repaired the solder joint myself.

The code on the SainSmart website (keypad_lcd.zip) is not very well documented or organised. To use it with Arduino 1.0 and above, unzip the archive and copy the keypad_1602for_1.0 folder to your Arduino libraries folder. Rename keypad_1602for_1.0 to DFU_Key, and the example code should work correctly.

Overall the keypad/lcd seem decent, however I'd hesitate when ordering SainSmart items in the future given the faulty solder joint.

I have increased the rating to 4 stars because the vendors have included the message "Do not use Pin 10 while this shield is connected", under the product description. Note that this means that brightness will not then be adjustable, which conflicts with the description "adjustable backlighting" under "Technical details". Even with this limitation, £13.99 is still a good price worth 4 stars. However, if the price goes back up to £15.95, I may have to reduce the stars again until a real fix is implemented

Unfortunately Amazon appear to remove URL links. To see the fix required for this board, go to the Arduino.cc website forums and search for "Warning to users of some vendors LCD keypad shield". (Or just Google for it) Reply #10 by dweston shows the solution that I intend to apply, whereby a track is cut and a diode soldered across it, including detailed photographs.

Product fine but Sainsmart need to make the effort to explain the pinout assigmnents necessary to make the standard arduino code work with this module. Simple changes necessary. Also the drivers they offer are a mess and not all of them are relevant to current arduino IDE and so for the beginner it it all quite confusing.

I purchased one of these units to fit to a DuinoMite-Mega, however, it could also be connected to other versions of the DuinoMite range with the correct leads. Although the DuinoMite-Mega does have connections for the Arduino range of clip on shields, in this case a little modification is required as two of the pins used by the LCD have different uses on the DuinoMite. Full instructions with clear diagrams are on the DuinoMite web-site. One basically has to disconnect two pins 19 and 20, and then make the connections that were going to pins 19 and 20 to pins 13 and 14. I found the best process was to just cut pins 19 and 20 off the LCD connector and then connect two short length of wire on the PCB to pins 13 and 14. It is also recommended that a resistor is fitted to the series ladder of the A_D input pin at the DuinoMite uses 3.3V whereas the Arduino uses 5V to power this resistor ladder. After this slight modification one just connects the LCD to the Mega and it is ready to program. You have to remember though if you download any test programs for the board make sure you change any communication from pins 19 and 20 to pins 13 and 14. I downloaded the test program from the DuinoMite web-site, changed the pin references and it worked first time printing the required test on the screen. With pushbuttons for Up, Down, Left, Right, Select, and Reset, which resets the whole computer, not just the LCD, it makes it very easy to control.

I would recommend that you download the Hitachi HD4478 datasheet which like most if freely available on-line, as this explains exactly how to use the device, with explanations of the control registers, etc.
