this is such a fantastic cd. i just expected another one of these cheesy shanty-choirs but this is gritty, authentic stuff. the singers put their heart and soul in the performance and you get a real feeling for the work. it is accompanied by a very informative, enlightening booklet with lots of info.

I bought this on the recommendation of the previous review and wasn't dissapointed. This isn't one of those sanitised versions of what are worksongs, (or relief from work songs) but the raw thing. Good, informative liner notes and the voices of Ewan MaColl and The Watersons among others. At the price a bargain!

A really great classic shanty collection.
With 26 tracks, this is an excellent buy, and the singers are superb voices from the past: Collectors like Bert Lloyd and Ewan McColl; Peter Bellamy and Stan Kelly. Read more

This CD is compiled from recordings released on the celebrated "Topic" label and so you would expect serious, musicologicaly correct renditions of genuine seamen's songs. Read more

Very basic stuff
I bought this CD with the Fisherman's Friends compilation from Cornwall. One is really good, the other verging on the awful. Guess which!

wide selection of songs but recording is poor to very poor. Not worth it compared to other possible items
